I am planning a big day ride for Saturday (6.13.09). I am going by myself regardless, but it would be nice to have some company.

Here's the route: Leave about 6:00 A.M. heading East then North to Safford, East to Morenci, then North on the 191 to Alpine. Eat, rest, then Southeast down the 180 into NM, South to 78 for Mule Creek Rd, West on 78 back into AZ through Guthrie, back to Safford and Back to Rita Ranch.

Heard some great things about 180 and Mule Creek Rd, so I have the weekend to do it and do some exploring is always fun.

    Hey,

How did it go? I wanted to make it but I couldn't.

That is so cool. I certainly have to make that trip. I was slated to hit Vegas this weekend but it didn't work out. I might have to try this on Sat morning...

I'm hooking up with a friend from Albuqurque in Show Low in a couple of weekends with the intent of doing that loop. Looks like we're going to have a lot of fun.

What's the New Mexico portion like?

It varies between high desert and Pine forest. It's beautiful, man. I'll probably do it again here in a few weeks and go the other way! OR I may go balls out and head up to Durango and do the loop up to Silverton. etc.

Finally did this exact loop. First time I've done the 191. At times I have lusted for more horsepower, but the fun I had in the really tight stuff (and how far back my buddy on his FJR was) makes me re-think that. It's a must-ride for anyone in AZ, or New Mexico for that matter. Stayed in Springerville Friday night and did the loop Saturday -- was shocked at how little traffic there was.

Also the first time I rode the Salt River Canyon (Friday about 4 p.m. on my way to Springerville) -- spectacular except for the traffic.

Trying to do all the family stuff I can at the moment so that I can bank some brownie points to be able to get away with this again in the near future.
