For an extreme example of the sound of gear driven cams, fastforward to minute 3:55 of this clip:

YouTube - Honda VFR 750f Sound Check

It's subtle. It's most pronounced when you're engine braking in 1st or 2nd gear with your visor up, and aftermarket exhausts might drown it out.

Having gone '91 VFR, '92 VFR, '02 CBR600F4i, '92 VFR - I can tell you, it's not something that you notice so much when you have it. But it's one of the first things you miss when you don't. :)

I'm obviously a fan of the 3rd gen. The fourth gen isn't really much different. It shed a few pounds, but most of it was by going to thinner rims/tires (I thought?). I just prefer the 3rd gen for the styling - probably for no other reason than it's the first one I owned.

Gen 2 is the lightest and probably the quickest. I dig the fairings, but not so much the low exhaust and the conventional swingarm.

So it boils down to taste. Having ridden an 5th gen, I can tell you there's not any real difference in the way of handing, power, or ergos. So it boils down to what you think looks/sounds the best, and what's your feeling on linked brakes and V-tec.

    hmmmmm, the best VFR

    1. The one where you are trying to remember if you forgot your camera instead of your extra RR.
    2. The one that comes with a wiring harness that is actually designed to have voltage come out the other end when connected to a battery, not just smoke.
    3. The one that will actually run after sitting in the garage for 6 months.
    4. The one you don't have to start "Carb Help Please" threads about, 3 times every riding season.
    5. The one where you don't have to scab on parts off another model of machine just to achieve acceptable performance of the standard components.
    6. The one where you can easily get new basic parts instead of having to scour ebay for 6 months to obtain something that you hope works.
    7. The one that is faster than your buddies R6
    8. The one that your significant other doesn't throw on the ground every 3 days and you have to eat up all of your riding time fixing it.
    9. The one that actually has tire options, rather than having to replace the rim to fit a tire bigger than what comes on a moped.
    10. The one that doesn't have a seat that requires that you do a year of physical therapy to recover from a 200 mile ride.
    11. The one where a mere mortal doesn't have to spend $800 on a valve adjustment.
    12. The one where you don't ride it home from the dealer, take it apart, and have to throw the shock away because it's shot.
    13. The one that actually has a positive power to weight ratio.

I could go on, but I just realized that it hasn't been built yet

    Well duh;

Without my ol' girl (and her sisters), there wouldn't even be a VFR at all....so the best is the one that started the whole shabang!

    Respect gents, respect....

Actually, I'm on the hunt for a decent 83 to restore to factory specs. Genuine piece of Honda (and superbike/sportbike) history there my friends....

I have owned an 86 750 for a little over 2 years. Great bike, makes pretty good power and sounds awesome and I can keep up with most sport bikes in the canyons. It's a gas to trail brake.

Now I wanted a newer bike to travel the Western USA a little this year and for a month next spring/summer. I picked up a Gen 6 with hardly any miles on it.

The 6 is a great ride, a little heavier, but it is sooo damn comfortable and just plain cruises. I have little doubt I will be able to put 500-600 a day on it and I think it is a beautiful bike. Like most have said, the best VFR is the one (or two) that you own.

i have to take issue with the numbers posted on the 86 VFR750. A tank empty weight of 477lbs?? No freakin way! Fully fueled my 86 weighs 458lbs, which is right on considering my original 86 sales brochure states the dry weight at 436.7 lbs.

    ebay

check ebay and be patient....very patient. every once in a while you'll get to see one. they are rare to find and sometimes come in colors that don't match our bike. the previous owner of my 3rd gen (white) bought a red seat cowl then painted it white but didn't match but was close enough. planning to have it redone at a friend's shop. good luck.

Not that I want to start anything obnoxious....but whats wrong with 1st gen ...and 2nd gen ... 3rd gen, for your comparison? I mean lay it all on the table, ride one of each.... they all count right? and each one has its own "speciall' quality that is VFR...I think we can all agree on that...I think Drewl said it best way back in the first post: " A model that continues to thrive after 25 years is obviously a good one."

    Crusty

happy owner of a gen 2 first run VFR

1st and 2nd gens are the only ones to win AMA Superbike Championships.
