Has any ever seen or heard of anyone seriously competeing in any of the Iron Butt rides or competions & being competitive. I've never seen one on any of the listings, mostly a mix of various BMW's, Goldwings & ST's. Not that I would be willing to attemt it on my 86' VFR, just curious because I will be buying something newer next spring. I was thinking a K1200LT or a R1150, maybe even a R1200C/CLC. If funds are lower than expected maybe a ST1100/1300, possibly a GoldWing( But there just to Damn big & wierd to ride) or I could go back to the Tried & true Old Style Yamaha Venture(early mid 90's) I had a 87' & it was one of my favorite rides (power/handling & comfort) But I've never ridden a newer VFR are the ergonomics somewhat better for distances up to 1000 miles a day than my 86' is? What ever I do I don't plan on giving up the old girl just adding on, I would also like to find a Mid 90's CB1000 or settle for the newer 919.

Yes. A woman just did a thousand miles from MN to Key West in 48 hours on a VFR. "Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you're right"...Henry Ford

Back when I had my '98, I did a combo Saddle Sore 1000 & Butt Burner 1500. I was a little sore, but survived. I don't see any reason why I couldn't do either on the '04. Certainly my previous K1200RS or FJR1300 were better suited, but the VFR is fairly capable with some slight mods.

    VFR800 Iron Butt

I recently completed a 4800 mile ride from Massachusetts to South Dakota and back. The trip back to Mass was an Iron Butt Attempt, I did Rapid City to Gary, IN in under 20 hours and made it to the Boston area in 42 hours. If my math is correct thats 2000 miles on the return trip.
My ride is a 2000 VFR800, no mechanical mods, no seat mods. Added Givi E-36 hard bags, a taller Givi screen and a set of mirror mount fog lights from Electrical Connection.
My knees were what bothered me most, but because I stopped every 160 to 190 miles for a quick gas break, I made sure to do a quick stretch and then get back on the road.
I think that a real Iron Butt attemp is possible on a VFR, but if I did it I would want to be younger and in better shape.

    Yaller.

I'm with you on the younger & in in better shape thing, I to suffer knee problems when aboard my VFR it is my only complaint about it. That is aside from the fact that I'd like to upgrade about a decade or so in the model year. I need to pick up a touring bike before I can upgrade the sport ride though, it will make married life a little easier if I can take her with me; otherwise the bike is despised as much as a mistress would be.

I did the Iron Butts Saddle Sore 1000 back in June!

It was not easy, but it was a great experience! I was on the 97 and my friend Jeff and his fiance were on his 06 Busa.

I put a post up about it in June, don't know what forum it would be under?

I regularily go for 600 mile day trips, not sure if if I could much more than 750 in one sitting though. I'm pretty happy to get off the bike after 600 but usually none the worse for wear.

I'm seriously thinking about the Iron Butt Ride in 09. My 05 Interceptor, which I'm guess will have 38000 at the start line, will be in top possible condition and I intend to have few mods, mainly seat, nav and tunes. What do you all think?

All good mods for an IB ride.

My stock seat was killing me at the end of the 1000 mile day!

I say got for it if you think you can hack it. The hardest part (to start) might just being able to be accepted in. Only 100 entries and well over 2000 applicants each year. There is a nice article on Michael Kneebone (the event coordinator/owner) and how that he chooses who gets to enter. $1600 bones to enter, and no winnings....all about the bragging!

Let me know if you find that post Bubba...I would be interested to read it. That is one of the problems that I have sometime, finding old threads that I used to. I would start by doing a search for all threads that you have started, and go from there.

Get some bike shorts with gel or chamois padding. A huge help on my coast to coast to trip this summer.

Well this is not iron butt achievement according millage but it was one of the toughest ride I have.Back in sumer we went on a trip to Dolomites(Italy). We rode from 7am until 19 pm with one gas stop and 45min.lunch stop.We did only 270 km (approx200mile) and ride over 8 mountain passes. The butt was OK but I felt my arms will fell off.Hope that will give you idea what kind of twisties we rode.Next year the plan is for one week. Can`t wait.

bike/compresion shorts is a must on any short or long distance ride  !!!!!!!!!!!!

I've done lots of IB rides, in groups or solo on stock bikes (except exaust & PC).

But my quickest was when I went to SoCal on a Friday & came back on a Sunday, & when I got home found out my dad was hospitalized as I walked through the door.
I left 15 minutes after that to go back to SoCal.

So all 4 directions was 2844 miles in 5 days, with a Sunday jaunt round trip in 19hrs of 1422 miles:eek: , on a stock '06 Triumph Sprint ST (only mod was a 2 up touring Triumph option gel seat).
