I recently acquired a 2006 VFR800 And I am experiencing a few problems, when the bike is in 1st gear (moving) and when I pull the clutch lever in there is a slight grinding sound (like reeeeeeeeeeeeeer); when Im gliding in neutral. I do not experience this problem with any of the other gears. I have not experienced this problem on any of my previous bikes; is this something I should be concerned about, or an easy fix?

Also, the engine sounds a little clanky or thumpy. I recently had the oil changed and that did not fix anything.

This grinding/dragging sound happens when in 1st gear with the clutch pulled in. Again, there is no noise, in any other gear with the clutch pulled in.
And the bike has 3500 miles on it.

    Thanks for your help.

1st gear is fairly low so it does whine a bit, I have gotten used to it but to dbl ck before I say it is normal. I will pay attention to 1st gear when riding in tomorrow and let you know if mine makes any noise.

ok rode my bike in and several times ran it in first pulled in clutch.
no unusual sounds from trans, very low whine but hardly noticable.
how loud is noise from your trans?? might want to dig a little deeper into it.

The sound is very noticeable. There is something obviously wrong with the bike. I wish I could figure this out. The more I think about it, maybe the clutch isnt fully disengaging in 1st gear. Do you think the clutch spring upgrade would solve this?

Mine make a grinding kind of sound when I am in first coasting with the clutch in. You really have to be listening for it to hear it. If I put it in neutral it stops. It has always done it so I just figure it is normal.

    Thanks for your reply,
The grinding sound that i have experienced is very noticeable. I know what your talking about though, in the other gears there is a very slight noise. I am experiencing a sound about 10x louder than the other gear noises.

If I take it to the dealer Im going to be charged at least $200. I would rather buy Thanks for your reply,

You can try to bleed the clutch fist and once it is bleed lossen up clutch slave cyln ( do not remove ) pump up the clutch then tighten the bolts back up.
the only other thing I can think of is the shift fork is bent.

you mean the dealer you'd take it to won't test ride the bike and offer an opinion without charging you? take it to a dealer who will. did you buy this bike from a dealer or private party? any warranty left on it? Also why would you be gliding along in 1st w/ the clutch in anyway? the bike doesn't sound or act odd when going up or down thru the gearbox anyother time? i'm assuming you don't have an extended warranty but bringing it to the attention of American Honda at least they'd have it on record and or they may be able to set your mind at ease. this maybe a simple design quirk with the vfr. however there should be no reason to ever glide along in 1st with the clutch in.

    Thanks for your help,
THe bike does not lurch forward, it rides perfectly fine except for that noise.

I have to go through about 4 stop signs (100 yards apart) to get home so thats how I noticed the noise. I bought the bike privately so no warranty. I will try taking it to an official honda dealership.

Before you get too crazy please try this. Pull the clutch in without engaging a gear with the bike running at idle. If it still makes this noise there is nothing to worry about. It is a normal noise the clutch makes on Gen 6's. There is an earlier thread on this issue. The sound you are describing certainly sounds like that issue.
