definitely do the 800 km oil change and cough up the extra $$ to get the full synthetic oil.
which dealer did you buy from? theyre usually pretty good at explaining the break in procedure....no red lining or coming close to red lining, take it easy on the new tires till theyre scuffed, run through the gears, etc. i bought from carter in coquitlam and they did a good run through when i picked the bike up.

Man I remember looking into this with my new DRZ400. There is somewhat of a debate with getting the pressure in there fast to seat the rings right or something like that. I chose the "run the crap" out of it method from the start. Lets just all agree???

Ride it like you stole it. Make sure you visit many different RPM ranges. It is easy to want to sit around 5K PRM but you want to be all over the dial.

Do not wait the full 1k for the first oil change and make sure you change the filter. 500-800 miles.

the problem is that the rings require a different set of break in parameters than the bearings do and you can't make it perfect for both. Take your pick.

I never heard that before but seems to make sense. So you can choose properly fitted piston rings and the chance of bearing failure or nice happy bearings and a piston that is never seated right. I say run the crap out of it still!

Google "aircraft", "piston engine break in". There is a lot more riding on breaking those engines in correctly, than there are with motorcycle engines. Almost universally, this is the same break in method used by race engine builders, there has to be a reason.

You may do well to not use synthetic oil until at least 9000 miles.

where did you hear that? it is completely safe to use whatever oil you want after 1500 miles or a couple days at the track.

A good engine builder will tell you to change the oil after the first 20-30 miles.

I've always done the "ride it like you stole it" method and never had a problem. About the first ten miles or so I take it easy and after that I try to keep it about a thousand RPMs or so away from the redline till about 500-600 miles. I'm also anal about my oil and will usually change it at about 30 miles and 200 miles...then do it around 800 and start following the regular schedule. Make sure you change the filter every time, don't stay in the same RPM ranges, and use all the gears regularly.

I found this link one day and thought that it was a great explanation to share with others from time to time. Hope it helps.

I also forgot to say this.... no synthetic oil untill at least 800 miles. Synthetic oil will not allow for the rings to seat properly and you WILL have problems. I switch over to synthetic at my 800 mile oil change, but some postpone it till the oil change after the 800 mile change.

Agree completely I myself went to a semi-syn at the 800 and going to full syn after 3000 just to be safe although probably not necessary if you us full syn to early the rings won't seat properly and you'll start to burn oil around 30,000 miles

Manual will say bla bla stay under 5k bla bla
    Truth is be everywhere!!
Most manufactures are anal for liability reasons .I find it funny how 800cc engine they recommend changing gears for every 10 mph like going 5th on 50!!!

I would have said change it after your first outing but was going conservative. There is so much milling crap left in the engine you really want to get the oil to pick it all up and deposit it In and behind the filter (Filters have an ainti drain back valve). Then change the oil and filter and get it out of there.

I figured 500 miles would do that. I would also change again at 1K. By then you should have selected the oil you plan to run and have your filters chosen. Then be ready to move on with your riding.
