:frown::frusty: Yep I knew it, things where going to good. After that great ride with Slo and Reg 400+ miles, came home parked in the garage, shut the bike off and I notice right off the bat something smelled not so right, funny was like burnt nylon, took the seat of took a flashlight as I suspected the RR, I never trust em even thou in my 20+ years of owning em this bike is the first to go through an RR, I bought an Electro one last year, didn't like how it was made, but it worked, till now. I took my heat gun for a quick read and was telling me at the plug it was 191 degrees, I go wow, oh no this ain't good, started the bike up did a test and it was working like it was suppose to, so I blew it off as a freak thing. Ok, last night was the first time back on the bike since then, went to a bike night here was only like a 10 mile round trip, came back in the garage, ah same smell again, seat off, took a look, got the temp gun, yep 192 degrees this time. So off with the tail, to get to the RR to take a closer look, My oh My, was that plug fried, the nylon was so fried it just crumbled while pulling it out, don't know why it didn't catch on fire, funny thing though other than the getting hot the RR is doing its job as far as charging goes. Well H! I'm buying a Ricks RR this time. Thing is for me being who I am I'm looking for that plug, Ha yea right, only comes with the wire harness, $50 for one at the bike yard so I'm in the hunt for one. In the mean time I'm curious what folks have done when there plug goes south? I have an idea on what to do, but hate jerry rigging.
J.: I used a plug for a Honda PC800 (same model years) as our 4th gen and it was plug and play! You can order one from www.denniskirk.com. Part no. 211269 for $9.99 That's were I picked mine up at! I did have to solder the new connectors on, but that was easy. Any other q's let me know! BZ
Sounds good! I was in the same situation and I forget how I found out the plugs were the same, but they are. I just cut the old plug off as close to it as I could to the plug. Soldered on the new brass ends, inserted them into the new housing and 'presto'! Good luck! BZ
Big Thanks, man that Part# scored big with the gal, Bingo there it was, so it's all ready on it's way. ain't this place great or what!
One warning...at least in my experiance the new brass ends are 'tight'. So when you plug your new Rick's RR in go slow so you don't crush the new brass ends. I actually had to use a small screw driver and open them up a little. just an FYI. BZ
"I notice right off the bat something smelled not so right, funny was like burnt nylon..." I know that smell (shakes head aka Clark Griswald in NL Family Vacation)...Good luck, RVFR. I'm in the same boat. I'm hoping to be riding again soon.
Can't go wrong with Ricks....as you know. I believe it was you who told me, Rick's was the only way to go. 7000 miles later on, still running strong.
I bought mine last year from DK, is was an Electrosport, it lasted 9 months, and left me stranded several times, killed a new battery AND blew both headlights. I sent it back to Electrosports, I got one of the bad ones and their warranting it, but that's been 3 weeks and I'm still waiting. I bought another one from DK, this time I got a Rick's RR, so far so good, I'll through the Electrosport one in my Givi bag, incase I find some poor sucker broke on the side of the road (I'm sure he'll have an Electrosport on there when it dies).
Ok guys, whats this R&R thing you're talking about? I'm new with these interceptors, just had mine three weeks now. I've got an 06 with bout 1800ks on it. Is this a problem one can expect or just a random occurrence?
RR stands for Regulator/Rectifier. I'm new to owning a VFR as well, so I find myself reading all the mechanic's garage posts to learn more about my bike. Here is the link to the Rick's RR on Denis Kirk. DennisKirk.com - Ricks Regulator/Rectifier
Mmm gee sounds like me, yea lasted bout 9 months 4,500 miles, but figured it's not worth the effort fighting them for a replacement, but then I like your thinking, get it as a back up like you said. Hmm nothing wrong with giving it a try, thanks for the push. Yea its RR = Voltage Regulator, seems it's one of the only trouble these VFR have. I wouldn't worry to much on yours as yours is pretty new still, whats ya think 6th gen owners is it something to worry about? But some will go forever, some go through em like every two years or less, I haven't read much in what the cause is and Honda is no help. Me? this is my first VFR in having them for 20+ years without any problems. Now this bug has bitten me twice in 1 year. Guess it's pay back or Murphy's law catching up.
R&r Thanx for the info, very helpful. Went to the link at Ricks RR and their parts only go up to 2005, mines an 06. Hopefully I'll have no problems???
I'm not 100% certain, but I don't think that your bike is any different than the 05. Don't take my word on that, but I'm pretty sure. Great looking bike by the way. The white has been my favorite VFR color (especially in the 6th gens)
Well, can only hope mine won't give me any problems, will just have to wait and see. If the symptoms occur I'll have a heads up as to what to do. You'd think Honda would have all the bugs ironed out of this bike by now!!!!
Ultimate Fix I modified the year of the R/R the wire harness and the mounting and I can put my finger on it after a hot day. If you want the ultimate fix, take a look.arty2: http://vfrworld.com/forums/modifications/14147-r-r-relocation-opinions-needed.html
My pooter for some reason won't link up to the thread you've supplied, surely would like to see it though!!
Well J. I guess our 97's got together and talked! Mine is doing the same exact thing yours is...WTH!!!! God willing I'll make it home from work today. Time for a Rick's Electrics RR and new plug! I told the wife that the 97 may become the dedicated track bike if it keeps this BS up! BZ
http://vfrworld.com/forums/modifications/14147-r-r-relocation-opinions-needed.html I tried adding the link again. This fix was a new R/R (larger newer unit) moved to someplace it gets lots of AIR and beefed up the wiring.
