sorry this is probably a noob question, but i have limited internet and can't search much.

I have a 86 VF500 I just bought. The tank was rusted and i had a shop clean it and they lined it. I just went to put it back together, but the bike does not start. I'm not sure where the one hose coming off the petcock goes (might be a good reason it doesn't start). I hooked up the fuel line, but there is a smaller line i need to figure out where it hooks to. so I need help with that.

When i first got the bike, there was a little fuel left in the line and it did start (not hooked to the gas tank). so it is start-able. the gas tank was off the bike, so i didn't get to see where the line went to.

I also got some gasket material at autozone to put on the petcock (because it leaked when i first put it back on). it seems the gasket is of some sort of paper and it now has fuel on it. so i may also need to get a new gasket, any suggestions of what to get?

i think that is all for right now

thanks for any help you can give.

The small line is a vacuum line that comes off of the petcock and usually goes to one of the brass nipples on an intake boot. It's been a while since I've worked on a 500, so I can't remember exactly which one it goes on, but usually the others have rubber caps on them. That allows the petcock to open to allow for fuel flow. With all the rust, make sure you have a new fuel filter on, even though the tank was cleaned and coated. Also make sure that the coating they used is not hampering fuel flow. As for the gasket, just order an oem one. They're cheap and better than making your own.

i've only found one brass nipple. it has a nut at the end of it. i tried to attach the vacuum line to that, but it still doesn't start. -although i may have the wrong one. I have the clymer manual, but it doesn't really show where it goes either. If anyone out there has a picture i'd appreciate it!

I can't find where to get a gasket, there isn't one online on any parts diagram, but it leaks without one.

and last stupid question, where do i find the fuel fitler? the clymer shows where it 'should' be, but there isn't one there on my bike. i've noticed a few differences from my bike and the clymer.

i'd take it to a mechanic because i'm really new to bikes, but i don't have a trailer, so i have to fix it myself...
