Hi All, quite a nice forum you have put together here.

My buddy is the original owner of an 84 VF 1000 that had been sitting for quite some time. He took it to a local shop who claimed to have rebuilt the carbs. Apparently, they either lost some springs or installed them incorrectly. My buddy is not very mechanical and I got this story several years after he got the bike back. Needless to say, he hasn't ridden the bike in years and is very frustrated - so I promised to help him out.

I figure I would pull the carbs apart and get a schematic somewhere to see exactly what is missing. The question I have is: if the springs are actually missing, can they be purchased? I have seen gasket and needle kits, but not springs.

The other option would be to simply swap out the carbs for another set. Are there any other carbs that would bolt up to this engine? If not, is it possible to find a set of used carbs anywhere that could be rebuilt?

I appreciate any help in advance. Thanks.

    Well, depends on what springs.

Last time I checked, honda could still get most parts and pieces. Try there first.

The V4 carb bank is kind of complicated if you're not used to them. If they're really buggered, check ebay or a local wrecker for a used set and rebuild those....

Get a hold of a service manual also...

Check one of the online parts fiches like bikebandit.com or ronayers.com for the carb parts. If you want to swap out the full set, carbs from the '85-'86 vf1000R will also bolt right on. Someone on eBay is offering rebuilt 1000R carbs for around $400 US, do a search on eBay.

Most likely it's the springs between and connecting the carb throttles. They always go "bong" when pulling the carbs off and you have to search for them. There's one spring between each set that's between the throttle shafts horizontally. Then there are two small springs that go between each set for throttle opening, in a vertical position used to sync the carbs.

If you have a factory manual then rebuilding the carbs are not that hard at all. There are differences between the sets(2-4 & 1-3) that the book points out. There are parts manuals free on line. I think somewhere on this site or at least a link to. If needed have someone fax you the carb section out of a manual.

It's a time consuming job but not real technical unless you've never rebuilt carbs before.

I would highly recommend going over to V4HondaBBS.com and checking out Billy C in the vendor's section - he is the MAN when it comes to 1st gen Honda V4 carbs. Very informative site also...

Wow, you guys are great! Thanks for all the prompt and pertinent responses. I've got my work cut out for me, but you have definitely emboldened me for the task. I'll update as I get more info/parts.

The bike has, about, 10,000 miles on it if I recall. So it should be in decent shape otherwise...
