Hi guys, I've been riding my 96 a couple years now. It's a great bike, well maintained, and I love it. Almost 23K miles on it, all the maintenance is done.

That said, my nephew wants to buy the bike for about $3K. I have been looking at an 03 VFR with similar miles for $3200. Body conditions are equivalent to each other.

Would YOU do the upgrade and why or why not? I like the idea of the fuel injection, like the newer bike, but I'm unsure about the VTEC and the styling. It's a $200 upgrade for 7 years, that's what I'm really looking at, but do I own the better bike today from a riders standpoint?

Entirely your decision. If you're leaning one way already, go that direction.

VTEC is VTEC. The only time I even think about the VTEC is when someone on the board mentions it. An owners happiness with the VTEC system is completely dependent on their riding style. If you're more of a leisurely rider and don't rip into it too much, the chances of it annoying you are higher. I spend a lot of time above 7,000 RPM so I never even know it's there. I wouldn't base your decision on the VTEC if that's a holdup. Now styling, that's obviously personal preference. I actually do think the 6th gen VFR is ugly but if you can find me a better all around tool, I'll buy it.

For me, $200 for a 7-year newer bike is a no brainer.

    I'd NEVER do that trade!!

Just look at the Fi problem posts, the thermostat issues, the wiring harness recalls, etc,

YOUR simpler '96 will give fewer mechanical and electrical probs over the years and is lot easer to work on and to fix.

Of course it's a matter of opinion, but a newer VFR is not necessarily a better VFR.

Please tell me you're simply lobbying for more brethren? :vader:

30,000 completely abusive miles in two years.

Issues: Wiring harness recall and NOTHING else other than a tail light bulb. Mine's an 03 also.

Can we please get a sticky for Two4One's Temp gauge and oil signatures?

Personally, no. I would own an 4th or 5th gen, but not a 6th. To me, they seem very vanilla....not much too them. One thing you will gain is better suspension and brakes. How important is that to you?

I don't know where you will find a bike with more character than a 4th.

Jason, I can't believe Two4One even posted up his response:crazy:

Slick50 made Two4One into the rider he is now! SLick 50 showed him ALL the good lines around the track. Slick 50 made his throttle hand supple and light. Two slipped a NESBA CR some of the 50 and was bumped to Advanced immeadiatley!

How can he knock da 50??!?!?!

Slick 50 is "Were it's At" just like the Beck song. VFRW should have 50 pages dedicated to the Slick 50:biggrin:

The main advantage is gonna be the fact that the older bike is getting harder to find parts for. I think if you spend any time at all on this forum you find that carbs are crapping up all the time. At least on the earlier models. I love my 5th gen and would be hard pressed to think of getting rid of it. If I did, it would be for another VFR.

    Thassright !

Carbs are never a problem after storage IF they are stored correctly:

    1) with engine running, turn petock to OFF

    2) wait until engine runs out of fuel and dies

    3) set choke lever to ON and run engine again for a few seconds until it dies

    4) crank it over a few turns to suck fuel through jets

    5) open screws on float bowls and drain carbs

This method is nearly 100% effective.....

IF fuel injection is simpler than carbs, why does the Bible ( Honda service manual) have 7 pages related to carb repair and 35 pages to troubleshoot FI ????????

Ya gota love this thread. I say KEEP the 4th gen for yourself, make your nephew get the 6th. last of the truly cool VFRs IMO, yea a 5h isn't bad has great motor but the rest is.... don't even compare a 6th to a 4th, a 6th is a whole nother breed.

These Generation topics are a frigging joke. Opinion disguised as fact . . . .

Go ride a 6th G and see what you think. You may - or may not - like it. Don't pay much attention to the biased crap you read here.
