This is the way it's done by the factory on bikes shipped to Europe. That is why it's so easy to mod the rear light that we get here in the US. I filled mine with a diamond section of plastic from Home Depot. The 2 x 2 square of plastic is designed for drop in flourescent ceiling lighting and costs about $2.

I will try to post some pix tonight.

swilliams97 and cornercarver, I'm looking forward to pic's. I'm a real cheap ba$t^rd, and would love something real clean that doesn't take much cash.
    I like what I hear.

Mellow, I'd still like the LED part and weigh my options. Nice hand work on the bracket. I'm confident I could do something similar.

    I'll check in later......

I bought the lite from J&P cycles online or check : http://www.radiantz.com/
--the lite is the side mount style, reorientated on the top. I felt the the full length lite would be too much and wouldnt mount cleanly. Let me know if you have more q's...

It's really a cruiser part but I thought I could make it work for the sporty bike. I have more pics if you want....

I just eliminated the fender on my '03 VFR, without spending any money!! The stock fender has a metal bracket in the back, I took it off and re bolted it back to the bike. Then I took my plate and bolted it back to the bracket, but sideways so it would fit between the pipes. I didn't have to drill any holes or fabb anything! But I might drimil the tail light to give the plate a white light instead of red :)

I decided that your way would be the best method for me, the questions I have is did you cut out the whole opaque panel or just a section of it, if it was a section, did you mount the plastic or lexan from the outside or the inside of the light...
    Thanks-

I just got rid of the fender on my 04. I did pretty much the samething as everyone else. Pulled off the plastic and got aluminmium angle stock from lowes. Attached the stock by drilling holes to match up with stock brackets. Total cost $4.23. I'll post a picture in my gallery if anyone wants to check it out.

Quick update - Rode to work in the rain this morning (you know it would rain the day after I mod the fender). Mostly in traffic around 45 MPH. With out the fender I got spray up on the tail light and the exhaust but not up on to the back of the bike. So far I like the look enough that I'll leave the fender even though it means a little more cleaning.

It's funny to me how tastes run as I did this to my fender and love it compared to stock, but then you see some people looking for a stock fender to make their bike look stock again. To each his own...

Man your job looks clean, I thought you and Cornercarver forgot about me or never checked your PM's. I finished my modification last night, not as clean as yours but I don't have a dremel and you can't tell unless your changing the tire and looking up. I cut about 75% of the piece and siliconed the lexan on the cut edges. When I get a dremel I can redo it on hopefully make it look as clean as yours.

What I did is a combination of Mello's and yours. I cut the fender like Mello's "Wa. Rain" and did your light, I figured I can always take the rest of the fender off later. Thanks for everybody's help...

Heh, I just ordered this one myself also. Looks like a very clean install, uses existing bolts and mount points. No drilling or modification needed if used with a standard 4x7 plate and also keeps the stock plate light. Should be here in a few days. Now all I need is my license plate :)

    - Mostly I did it that ways as to not follow the crowd - it's unique and the light looks cool at nite. I'm usually the oddball that goes out of the way to be different... Like Reg says - to each his own...
