Well, I have been riding for 33 years and have fortunately never had an accident involving a car until this past Saturday morning.

We had left the house at 7:40am. Stopped at a red light not 5 minutes from my house. The light turns green and just as I got the bike rolling, a car hits us from behind at 60 kilometers per hour. The next thing I remember is running toward my friend and hugging her like no tomorrow just to know that we were both alive. Miraculously, we both walked away with just scraps and bruises (we both were wearing our gear which saved us for sure). The driver was charged with careless or dangerous driving (not sure which) and we had two great witnesses who were not afraid to stick around and get involved. Over the weekend, as the bumps and bruises started to come out, we were playing a bit of CSI to figure out what had happenened after the impact.

From looking at the front of the car, the impact happened directly on the back tire of the VFR. This, I believe, also helped to save us both as the tire acted like a big bumper. From there, my friend said she saw me go up and thought I was going to go over the handlebars. She was caterpolted out of her seat and on to the road to the right. I did a flip in the air while the bike fell on the right side. I landed on my feet for a fraction of a second on the left side the the bike as it was sliding through the intersection before I tumbled off to the right. My friend was still at the stop line of the intersection and I traveled with the bike to the other side of the intersection. The frame broke so the bike is a write-off. We both went to the doctor for tetnis shots for the scraps and then to the hospital to xray my knees which had swelled and were in a fair bit of pain. No breaks, just bumps and bruises.

We are both very thankful that neither of us were hurt. This being Motorcycle Awareness month and all, I thought it was a bit ironic. Now comes the fun part with the insurance.

I will be treasuring the picture that I have as my avatar as it is the only lasting memory of the beautiful black VFR that I once had.

It is amazing the difference that the right gear can make in an accident. I am very glad that you and your friend are ok. There are more beautiful VFRs out there just looking for homes!

I nearly had a similar thing happen Sunday. A dually came flying around a blind right hand turn as I was turning right into a restaurant lot, and he slammed on his brakes, swerved to the left, and missed my butt by mere inches. Then he foul-mouthed me! Is there a flaming a$$hole population explosion occuring, or what?

Good to hear you two are OK relatively anyways. Go get another baby soon as insurance cuts the cheque. Make sure you are well healed with no lasting issues before you sign off medically though. Injuries can come back years later to haunt you.

Thanks everyone. Yes, we are both VERY thankful and it has certainly made me reflect on my priorities in life. I will be on another bike. That is for certain. I have uploaded some photos when I left her at the Honda Dealership waiting for the insurance adjuster. To see them, click on the link below.

Lucky you both are OK. You lived through one of the most uncontrolable accidents that can happen.
I run on of these: Night Rider LED Light Bar
It shows up really well from behind.

yikes. that sucks bigtime, I am so nervous of that kind of thing.. It seems like the one situation that you really cannot do that much about other than try to be visible...

Im glad you are both ok. That is what is really important.

I am a ways from Ontario, but my '07 is up for sale if you are interested in another VFR and I would give you a "crash veteran" deal!

    1. Document the perfect state of your bike, because you want an EXACT replacement.

    2. Figure your replacement costs at the exact bike in the exact shpae at or near you.

    3. Don't forget the seat, graphics, high pipe, and other add-ons now trashed.

    4. Don't forget gears ruined and now has to be replaced. Anything damaged.

    5. Don't accept till you get what you want. Do not sign a medical waiver till a doc has checked you out at their expense. Do not spend your money and wait for reimbursement.

BTW, you have up to 2 years to sue for damages to you and your girl in the US.

    Good luck,

    Larry
    VFRrider

Been there, done that, got the settlement to prove it. She now lives.

First off, I'm glad you both are okay and hopefully your full recovery will be soon. With that said, I must tell you that I have always liked your avatar. That was one of the sweetest bikes I had seen and I really like the black. Looking forward to seeing what your new baby will look like.... Get well soon (both of you!).

I always hate to hear about these kind of stories, and am sure glad you're both OK.

    NeverlosT sez:
Hough sez "why did you let him hit you?"

It doesn't matter who gets a ticket, in the end the 3000lbs car is always right. We/You have to consider what could have been done differently, and more safely.

    Glad you're Well!
