So I was riding in the rain yesterday and was wiping the rain with my gloved hand. Done it before with no problems. But yesterday it started getting a film build up. I figured it was mud or grim, but it won't wipe off! I tried water, an amoania free window cleaner, even vinegar, but nothing works. Once it dries, it films up again. What the hell? Any ideas? I would buy a new shield, but I don't think anyone around here sells AGV stuff.

Acid rain? Did you get splashed at all? Maybe there was oil or diesel fuel or something in it.

    Rain -X?

You didn't put Rain-X or anything like that on it, did you? It will eat the no-scratch coating right off a shield and leave a blurry mess. Years ago I put some on the shield of a brand new Shoei right before leaving for a rally because it was going to rain the whole way. It was terrible. Had to buy a new shield at the rally.

    Cheers!

I have used rainex for 2 1/2 years now with no problems. And with the amount of highway and shit weather riding I do, I have not encountered this problem. I don't know what to suggest other than to give it a good cleaning with dish washing liquid and re-apply Plexus and or Rainex.

rubbing baking soda by hand on a well-wetted sheild will remove film; as always, rub only left-right, not in circles.

    Rain-X

Perhaps Rain-X has a different formula for plastics, but on the back label of my Rain-X bottle it says:
"Do not spill, splatter or use on painted surfaces or plastics with scratch-resistant, U.V. or tinted coatings unless pre-approved by the manufacturer of the plastic to be treated."
Perhaps there are shields that it is OK to use on. But it smeared the coating on my Shoei into a blurry mess.

    Cheers!

Thanks for all the input. It appears that the anti-scratch coating (or some coating) on the outside is coming off. Not sure why. I've never used anything harsher than a non-amoania cleaner on it. Not to mention that I wiped it with my hand when it decided to come off. Weird. So I ordered a new shield. Should be here tuesday. I'm thinking of writing to AGV to find out why. Not to bitch, just out of curiousity. Thanks again.
