    Here is my dilemma.
    1996 18k miles
    200 vfr 10k miles
    pretty close price wise.
I really love the look of the 1996 and like the simplicity of carburetors however I was putt off by numerous posts here about R/R problems. The guy said he already replaced his however I don't know how much damage was done (fried melted connectors, alternator etc)
I thought If everything checks out then not a bad deal but I saw yellow 2000 VFR pretty much "new" and reading here it seems fuel injection has abruptness problems. Now I am not "soft" person and can deal with little abruptness but if it sarges a lot and on a curve wet weather it could become very serious issue. So I don't know.Buy 1996 with potential electrical issues or 2k VFR with FI problems (I assume its a problem but it could be not)

Thanks for your inputs .I specially like to hear from people who have these bikes.

I have a 2000 and the fuel injection is silky smooth.

I have a '99 which is very similar to the 2000 model. With the FI abrupt fuel delivery I haven't had any problems with it. The only slipping issues I ever had was at a toll booth due to oil deposits everywhere and taking off on a cold day (40f) on cold tires. And those are pretty much moot points because what tire is NOT going to slip in those conditions?

However, this is just my opinion and my recommendation is to negotiate a test drive on the 2000 VFR. What you could do is offer a deposit of half the price just for the test ride and even leave your keys to your car/truck as a assurance that you're not gonna take off with it.

Guys thanks for fast replys.I love that sexy yellow 2k VFR!! I sold my SV650 and looking forward for that V4 rumble.

I am going to buy that yellow bike! Thanks for confirming my intuition that abruptness is perhaps to selective bikes effected and not all.

    Another quick question.
Since I never had FI bikes if I install slip on do I have to do anything to FI mapping? Just wondering since its only a slip on and not a full system.
    Thank you

    The "Simplicity" of carbs, eh?

Trust me when I tell you, FI is MUCH simpler than carbs.

This is the process to start my 2000:

    1) Turn key to ON

    2) Press START switch

    3) Ride Bike

It doesn't get much simpler than that. FI is superior to carbs in every single aspect of STREET riding. Now if you're trying to tune to get every last ounce of HP out of a bike, then I suppose carbs could be better. Other than that, FI beats a carb every day.

    KC-10 FE out...

If it does end up being too abrupt you can always add a power commander model 2 or 3 and a fuel map to richen it up in the lower rpm's.

If you buy the 99, let me know who is selling the 2000. i am interested. that is what i would buy. you didn't say what the price was. I love that yellow Bike! how are the bikes cosmetically?
got any pics? the 99 is the sportiest of the VFRs, so they say.

If I tell you the price you wont believe it!! I mean Cheap! I can't tell you more details because I really really need this bike.I offered to buy even without seeing it (pics looked spotless)and so far I got no email back.
I am 44 and going through "midlife crises" and I need to ride and do things I love.No more second bests.I don't want to comprise anymore and you know what I mean.

    Update on the 2000 VFR
Price 3500 negotiated and settled Millage 2k however the reason is such low price because it was knocked over by a car in parking. One penal is destroyed and the other side has a dollar size hole.
He claims frame, forks and side radiators are fine (I have to inspect that specially side raditators) just cosmetic damage. This put a damper on my initial exitment but if its true only cosmetic then I am getting essentially new bike 2k miles for 3500. Even if it cost me 800-1000 dollars to replace those two panals I still get a "new" bike for under 5k.
I looked around VFR are hard to come by.People just don't sell them.
    Option B
buy carb 1996 with 18k miles with replaced r/r
I am not sure about this.Although I personally think 1996 VFR is or 4th gen is the best looking VFR ever on this line still I am going to buy 2k one.

Personally, I would never buy a bike that has been dropped or wrecked. You just never know. A few small scratches is one thing, however having to replace two panels? Too many ????? around it.

I would buy the bike you like the look of the most. If you don't, everytime you ride past one, you are going to wish you had.

    Funny Clip on Utube.Bookmarked it.
Its hard making decision without seeing the bike. 2k miles is sweet and I can live with slight cosmetic damage if that's is involved.
FI is a real selling point.I rather not go through card sinking, cleaning, choking if I have a choice.
I just hope mechanically is sound....
    Thank you for your input:smile:

I have a 2k Yellow VFR with a little over 35k miles. I agree with Joey dude on the FI abruptness - not an issue that I can see on a personal level - also there is no power commander installed on my bike - just a Yoshi pipe. I also had R/R issues with my 2k VFR so the only real issue may be weather you want the VFR with carbs or FI - take your pick. My personal recommendation would be to go with the newer bike which is the 2K Yellow VFR and check the R/R with a DVM. I would still get a new battery and if you like riding out of State a lot order a new R/R and keep it under the seat. Also check with the dealer to make sure the anti-freeze has been flushed/replaced and check the reservior. Good Luck with whatever you decide and Ride Safe.

Hey just saw your post about the 2k VFR being cosmetically damaged from a hit by a car. I may own and love the 2k VFR, but I would probably go with the undamaged 96 VFR. You can also keep looking around but, be prepared to pay 4k - 5k for a 5th gen VFR. I love the 5th gen vfr and since I am up there in miles I may either re-do my bike or trade for another 5th gen VFR with lower miles.

I am getting weird vibes from 2k VFR owner....Title issues etc. Too bad.As the saying goes "if its too good to be true then....you know the rest!)

I finally got the chance to see the 1996.The owner put 2k miles and the bike already had R/R replaced by fin type which means updated R/R
18k miles and few scratches nothing big.Needs tires, asking 3k
My only reservation is when I started I can clearly hear ticking sound. Not very loud but clear. Now I had no VFR before so I am cluess weather its the gear cams or something not quiet right.
I am not rich and forking 3k is a lot for me.I still have to spent tires registration tax so that easy will cost me 3700.
Any advise guys? Is that ticking sound normal? Is there anyone with 1996 engine normal sound that I can hear and compare?
Thanks.I love VFR and love you guys and really want to buy VFR since this community seems intelligent and tech oriented.

I know what you mean about dicey sellers. I bought a 2003 with some scratches and title issues but I did my homework and got the bike for a great deal. This is my first vfr and by far the best bike I have owned (#8). Go with the 2000 - control the deal and make sure the title is legit. You wont regret it.
