Thanks again. So I just ordered a new R/R. I went the stock route! Can't be bothered faffing about with wiring etc. Just plug it in and go. Got the upgraded SH689DA for €85...cheapest I could find but happy enough with that. I should have it in a day or two. If you don't here from me everything worked out!! Fingers crossed it is really the R/R and not something else.

    Cheers

ok! So my new R/R arrived. Looks a lot beefier than the old one. Wired the new one up and now I have a nice healthy 14.3V at idle and 14.1V @ 5000rpm. But 2 quick questions:

    1) The new unit arrived with a some sort of heat shield (a metal plate). The old unit didn't have this. I assumed that it is supposed sit directly between the r/r and the frame...as opposed to behind the frame and not touching the r/r...am I right? I'm no mechanic so sorry if its a stupid question!

    2) @5000rpm I am getting 14.1v to 14.2v with lights off. But when I switch lights on I am getting 13.8v to 13.9v @ 5000rpm. Is this normal/enough?

    Cheers again!

Glad to hear it's up and running again.

    1) You assumed correctly, but you should apply some heat sink paste between them. This improves heat conductivity, which helps in the cooling process.

    2) Those numbers look fine.

a battery tender is a great investment too, if it's not on the road, its on a tender... makes the R/R's life much easier dealing with a fully charged battery all the time

when you say "not on the road" what is your idea of that? I use my bike maybe twice a week at the wknds. But I would not consider that "off the road"...don't fancy switching out the battery everytime!!

it means if it is in the garage, it's on a tender. they come with a quick disconnect pigtail, keys out, tender in... all good
