Normal Operating Temperature

    What is the normal operating temperature on a VFR 6th Gen? Just want to see if mine is getting a bit too warm.

    This really depends alot on the ambient temperture outside and whether you are riding in the city (stop and go) vs constant speed highway riding. I usually see stop and go temps between 190 and 210 when the ambient temp is below 80 degrees. At highway speeds my bike doesn't ever get over 190. Just make sure you hear the radiator fan kicking on at 220 degrees which periodically happens to me in constant stop and go conditions when the temp outside is above 80 degrees.

    Mine was sitting around the 200-205 mark yesterday when I went for about a 30 min ride around town. Now I can almost guarantee that my riding without the side fairings had some to do with the air not getting to where it was supposed to had something to do with the temps being so warm.

    Those temps seem pretty normal to me especially if you are not maintaining a high rate of speed like you would on the interstate. It is very normal for the temps to quickly climb especially while you are stopped at a red light or just letting the bike idle in a parking lot. I really wouldn't worry unless your bike temp starts going above 230 or if you don't hear the radiator fan kicking in at 220.

    Stop and Go and warm days (>70) I regularly get 220s or higher. The fan always keeps it comfortable. Now moving I usually see high 170s or 180s.

    Highest I got the bike up to was about 45 mph, so it wasn't TOO fast. I'm still waiting on the new oil pan to get to me and my frame sliders so that I can finally button the bike up properly.

    Running at a steady 75-80 MPH on the interstate, with outside temps in the high 70's, I run in the high 170's-low 180's. On a warm day in stop and go traffic, it will get in the low 200's, and sometimes get above 220, at which time the fan comes on. Spirited riding on twisty roads with 70-80 degree temps, between 180 and 190.

    I got up to 235 on a 90 degree day in traffic.....i think the warning light comes on around 250?

    I regularly get up into the low 220 degree range riding in traffic around town, and then it drops down to low 190 range when I get out on the highway. Not sure if my bike runs a little hot, OR (more likely) the fact that I live in San Antonio. 70's? Those are winter temps around here. But my fan DOES kick on at that 220 range. The only thing I'm a little suprised at is that unoike a lot of cars, the fan turns off immediately when I turn off the ignition. Wouldn't it make sense to use the technology that would run the fan for five minutes to further cool off the mill? Can't imagine it would have that much of a negative effect on the battery, but then again, those suckers are pretty small...

    if you turn it off with the engine kill switch the fan will still run 'till it cools down (or you turn off the key)

    I am glad that someone did this post because just this past weekend I was doing some harsh twisties in the higher RPM's for almost an hour, and I almost had to stop because my 08' viffer was creeping up to as high as 239. I heard the fan running and as soon as I go to a straight peice of road the temps dropped quickly.

    Don't worry...they run hot. I've seen 234 in stop and go traffic during the summer in Manhattan traffic.

    You don't need the fan running after the bike is shut down. When the engine is shut off the water pump is not running, therefore you would only be cooling the stagnant coolant in the left radiator. The coolant in the radiators will cool very fast all by itself and have zero effect on the engine without the water pump running.

    today was a very busy day for me...
    flushed the radiator with distilled water twice.
    traded my 220 degree fan switch for a 178 degree fan switch.
    then i topped it off with distilled water and water wetter.

    after i cleaned up that mess i started on part 2 of the project...

    i took my motad and 2 bros out of their boxes and fully wrapped & sealed them up before installing them...

    i havent had much seat time yet but ill post up some pics and results soon...

    237 "parked" in traffic for 30 minutes

    Although my jeans were soaked due to the heat from the bike & the 95degree day, the bike had no problems. after we got past the accident that was holding up traffic (everyone just HAD to look) the bike dropped doen below 200 withing seconds of getting up to speed.

    Recently I hit 117c-118,c which coverts to about 242f-244f this was a hot day in traffic

    :eek: getting kinda close to the 250 warning light there...

    so i have been having an on-going water wetter vs engine ice in my head for a little while now.
    red line protects against rust and lubricates etc...
    engine ice has freeze and boil over protection etc...

    but, it appears that engine ice is an actual coolant and water wetter is an additive.
    on engine ice's website they go on to say that W.W. is a great product and can be used with E.I. but the gains are only marginal when used in conjunction...

    i think im gonna stop trying to decide between the two and just get both. besides i dont think id ever be able to pick one...:rolleyes:

    I was actually thinking about converting mine to the VTR1000 fans which push hot air outwards instead of the stupid VFR fans trying to pull air in (which obviously gets negated once you're at highway speeds).
