Hello people, I figured it was best to ask my question and post my introduction to this forum in 1 thread instead of making a seperate thread in the introduction forum. Hopefully this isn't a problem. Recently I purchased a vf500f '85 that was completely dissembled. Originally I was gonna use the parts for a cb500four cafebuild, but then decided after seeing that the engine was solid to rebuild the bike as a daily driver. This way I can sell my cb500four daily driver (which needs some TLC) and get some cash back, to buy more parts for my cafe. Now Im running into some minor problems. Because the bike was in bits most of the smaller parts are missing, some not so important other a bit more. For instance both engine spacers are missing (number 4 and 5 in this pic.) Now I was wondering if someone could tell me the width of both spacers, or measure them because I cant seem to find a breakers yard that has them available. I seem to have spacer 4 in one of the boxes that came with the bike, but its nowhere near a perfect fit I really have to hammer it in place, which does not seem ideal. ( i forgot to measure the spacer, but I will do this prob tomorrow) (plus I had some more parts with the bike, that are def for other bikes). Another problem I ran into was the carbs. When I operate the throttle not all the valves (if this is the correct word, english is not my native tongue) open equally wide. 2 Of the carbs seem to open slightly less, even on full throttle. I reckon Im missing some bits in the throttle linkage, prob a screw or a spring but I cannot figure out which and the microfiches are confusing me even more. I snapped some shots and emailed myself the pictures from my parents house (they have a big garage), but something went wrong, so ill try to post again tomorrow with some pics to illustrate my problem. Thanks in advance,
i would say the carb's might need a rebuild, spacer that mount to the engine i did know there was any?? p.s. welcome to the club
Hi, thanks for the heads up. The carb issue is already fixed after a cup of coffee and some meditation I decided that I seemed to be missing 2 small springs in the throttle linkage, so I salvaged them from an old bicycle alternator I had lying around popped them in and problem solved. Everything is working fine now. As for my spacer issue, I had another look in my Clymer workshop manual and it shows a picture of the frame including both spacers (similar to the other one I linked), but no dimensions on there either. Ill prob have to call some more breakers if noone can enlighten me on the dimensions. I also spent another hour or so further assembling the bike. Im doing this as cheap as possible, so all the solutions to problems are practical not pretty. Pretty much spend that hour replacing some hoses and cutting bolts to lenght, to replace missing ones. The right fork leg is also leaking and has some fall damage on top, so Im gonna have to order some new seals, put them in and pray the leg is not deformed to badly to prevent a good seal. The brakepads are soaking in gas now, since the leaking forkoil had drowned them and im to cheap to order new ones. My spare battery is charging now, so I can pop that in this week together with some oil and coolant and hopefully she will roar. I will try and get her dialed in a bit before I spend more money on her. I have to say as well, that the more I look at the bike. The better looking it gets. I will prob have to do something about the frontend, because im not to happy with that, but other then that it will be a fine daily driver I think.
