Ok so comming from a cruiser back to a VFR I have a really nice set of leather chaps. Am I going to get beat up or laughed off the road if I wear them on the VFR? I really like the protection they offer, and they are nice when it is cold outside.

I don't think anyone will laugh at you as long as you also have the Indian and the Construction Worker and maybe the Cop and are singing Y M C A!

Seriously, they do not offer much protection. I have seen a few guys with no a*s left after sliding down the road in their chaps. Save them for date night with gf or wife if she likes them.

I am not one to tell everyone to wear all the gear all the time but if you are looking for protective pants Icon jeans or Joe Rocket mesh pants are better than nothing.

By the way, I dont want to see any pix here for us to reconsider.

Man I hate to say this, but the answer is yes. If they don't say it to your face, it will be an inside joke. I also come from the cruiser lines "Road King" and I have thousands in apparel that is getting ready to go on E-bay. I just had to bite the bullet and ordered a Alpinestar spinner jacket off the net, In my opinion, there is no crossing over when it comes to apparel.

I have the joe rocket Alter Ego jacket that I got for a great price from the local stealer to use as a mesh jacket durring the summer so I am set there, I am looking at getting the matching pants.
I guess the leather jacket and chaps will go on ebay also or maybe to someone in the local cruiser community.

I wear my leftover from the cruiser leather chaps as they are just plain comfy..way better than my Bal pants, and safer than nothing...They work for me at below freezing temps just fine.

Why should you actually care what you look like to other bikers?

Or are you wearing them for another purpose?:)

I think everyone cares at least a little. I know when I rode a Harley, I wore a half shell and little gear. I knew the risks, but it just didn't seem right to me. And I don't need any lectures as I work in intensive care, I know the risks. I have taken care of more cruiser riders than sportbike riders. The sportbikers are either dead, or in and out pretty quick at least in my experience... The crusier riders, if they live, have lots of little things from no protective gear. I try to match the gear to what I'm riding. Hell, I don't wear tennis shoes with a suit. It's not much different. Some, but not much... I don't lecture anyone on what they wear as I believe in freedom of choice. At least as long as I don't have to pay their medical bills. ;)

I agree. I could really care less what a biker wants to wear or not wear, but there are certain things that go together and things that don't. For example; it just doesn't seem right to me when I see a sportbike rider not wearing a helmet. It looks strange. Helmets and sportbikes just go together, not chaps and sportbikes. And likewise with cruisers; leather and a cruiser style helmet goes together, not armored textile jackets. Finally, if someone wants to take the risk of not wearing protective gear, that's their deal not mine. Just my two cents.

actually I almost ride exclusively in jeans. Sometimes cargo pants. I do wear a jacket with armor and gloves and a full face helmet, though. Guess just my legs are expendable. I bought my bike used for cash, no freebies as far as riding gear. I want full gear, but my wallet has to catch up to my wants. I keep watching ebay, but I keep getting outbid by people who obviously don't check the new price before they bid on used stuff. Oh, and I ride to the gym in workout pants and a tank top (with a helmet). But again, it's my choice. I know the risks and the gym is less than 2 miles away.

hey zona, just realized you and I are almost equal distance from Las Vegas. I know there is at least one more member form Vegas. There is one or more from around LA... Maybe we should try organizing some type of ride in near there... Lots to do... We could wait til the weather is cool when the rest of the country is wishing they could go riding... then we could post the pics for them all to drool over. ;)

I don't know how you do it, the wife was watching some knee operation  on Discovery Health channel about 10 minutes ago and I don't have the stomach to even watch that, I guess you build a tolerance in working at the ICU..

:focus: I also don't wear full riding gear doing stuff around town, aggressive riding in the twisty's is a different story.

Reg...I do have the gear, but when i first switched back from a cruiser I did wear the chaps, and still do as I figure while not as good as full armor pants, they are still better than my jeans..Sometimes the $$ thing does make you put off buying the proper stuff..same with the temps..I dont have mesh and some days its just too hot for the pants..soooooooo.

But either way..since its hot today, Im gonna try the tank top and shorts..All i have is my boxers, so will see how it goes..I sure hope I dont get all those guys looking at me tho!!!! Maybe I will wear a helmet so they cant see who i am???

    :)

But since im taking off on Sat for a week down thru the mtns, I will wear my proper gear as I dont need no biker guys following me to my motel cause of my red shorts!!

    TTake care!!

Don't forget to look at ICON gear. They seem to have some pretty good stuff. I was checking some out on ebay yesterday since I need some non-laughable gear, too.
