With all the problems with the RRs and all the mostly should be reading answers, I thought it was time for some more definite stats.

    4th Gen 1995 VFR750F
It appears to be the original RR (2nd owner only 20 000 km)
I have never noticed any problems with this bike.
The battery is approx 2 yrs old.
Bike went for first ride, since winter set in, yesterday.
It sat overnight at about 0C/32F and currently around 4C/40F.

starting cold voltage: 12.83V (all readings taken at battery posts)
    ign/lights on...........: 11.80V
    key back off + 1 min: 12.60V
    engage starter........: 10.31V

    900 RPM : 12.63V DOWN TO 12.42V AFTER 5MIN
    1000 RPM : 13.30V
    11-12K : 14.75V
    1500 RPM : 14.60V
    2000 RPM : 14.45V
    2500 RPM : 14.31V
    3000 RPM :14.23V

The highest reading was registered at 1500rpm 14.8V. I found that it started to drop off after this, but remained above 14V.
The AC ripple voltage averaged 100mV throughout the range, which I feel is acceptable.

I hope this helps to clarify things.

Okay... I think this is gonna suck. I recently found that my 5th gen was resetting the clock and and trip. When I got the bike the guy had to charge the battery over night to get the bike going. It's worked fine except for the resetting and a couple of times the starter has sounded tired.... Okay, so the battery is on its last days, no biggie, BUT....

I checked the battery connections, no problem here.
Checking the battery with the ignition switched off: 13.29v
Checking the battery with ignition on: 12.45
Cranking the bike the voltage dropped to 8.9v
    After starting up, idling 12,79
Revving up to about 4000rpm 18.1v WTF?!?

Is this the common and sad problem with the R/R or could it just be that the battery is on it's final days and the inner resistance is so low that it is letting the R/R give out these kind of voltages?

Your numbers are definitely all over the place. Some of it may be the result of what is called a surface charge. This is a temporary voltage that appears during charging. The problem has probably been exacerbated by the fact that the regulator seems to be overcharging the battery. 18V is at least 3V above the norm. Due to the drop to below 9V on startup, I think the battery may be cooked as well. If it is not a maintenance free battery, it may just need a top-up with distilled water, due evaporation caused by the overcharging.

    Good Luck, Karazy

Okay, after checking everything I came to the conclusion that the r/r is fried. And my battery is probably cooked :) Order a new Regulator/Rectifier from Ricks.
