    Hello,

I have a 99 vfr and am looking for a tank bag that can hold a laptop with a few accessories (mouse, power cable, etc) that converts to a back pack.

Do they make such a bag?

    Thank you.
    Bill

I was considering the Icon Urban, but it doesn't have the laptop holder AFAIK. If you find something better, let us know. I'd be interested as I know better than trying to wear my backpack with the laptop in it on a motorcycle trip again. My back hurt for a whole day.

I have the Icon Urban and it works well and looks cool. It's the size of a normal notebook PC and can hold a lot of stuff. The only problem with it is that the inside pocket sucks because everything spills out of it when it's on the bike.

Ideally i would like something NOT magnetic. I am concerned about putting high powered magnets right on my computer....not to mention that it's a computer...held on by magnets.

let me revise my wish list :)

    - Computer / Tank bag (or quick removable saddle bag) held by mechaical fasteners to the bike.
    - Big enough to hold 15" notebook
    - powerblock, mouse, mp3 player and documents
    - convert to backpack when removed from bike.
    - able to attach other bags to the bike using same mounting fasteners.

I hear what you are saying and if you are concerned about magnets I would look for a different item. I have a 15.4" Dell laptop and this bag has given me no trouble with magnets near storage media.

I carry the power supply, some files, USB drives and other doodads. Since I have no floppy drive I do not carry floppies but none of my media has been effected by the magnets on this bag. It also includes a safety strap that fastens around the upper triple clamp area.

    Magnets

I don't really know how sensitive computers and their storage media are to magnetic fields, but on my Icon Urban bag the four magnets are super strong, are only about 1" in diameter, and are on wings about 4" from the main compartment. I don't see how that could have any effect on anything. I have my little thumb drive storage thing in there all the time and never had any problems. Heck, ask a computer nerd about it!

    ... I am a computer nerd... that's why i dont want the magnets. :)

When it's on the tank, i am not worried if they are outboard of the bag, but once you remove it and if then they are pressed against the side of the computer, there is a chance of it effecting the drive. .. .not ot metion that the computer is in there and not reeealy secured to the bike.

I would not want my work sliding off by chance one day.

If i find something I will report back..

I wouldnt even mind if it was a lockable saddlebag with a quick release that turned into a backpack.

Well Mr. Computer nerd, you should already know this then! The magnetic field has to be really strong, because it has to exceed the coercivity of the magnetic coating on the storage device. Hard drive platters have a coercivity of a few thousand Oersteds, which means a field of the same number of Gauss is needed to demagnetise them. The ferrite magnet on a computer's PC speaker, assuming it's not shielded, will have a surface field strength of only about a thousand Gauss, so it won't endanger hard drive data even if the drive's right next to it. Even 10,000 Gauss rare earth magnets can't wipe a hard drive if they're not sitting on top of it.

The Icon Urban turns into a backpack and helmet holder. If you can't get over your aversion to magnets then you should invest in some hard bags or get a tank bag that has the detachable magnetic pad or a pad held on by straps. You leave the pad and zip the bag on and off.
