I am going to replacing my rear tire on my 84 1000. it currently has the stock 140/80/17 tire on it but it is a hard size to find and there really isn't much to choose from when you do find the size. I was wondering if anyone has tried a different size on there bike???? I would like to put a 150/70/17 or a 150/60/17 any ideas???

I actually just installed the proper size on my '84 today. It is a Bridgestone Battlax BT-45 in the factory size. I have the same model tire on my other bike and like it. It is a dual compound, bias ply tire. Bike Bandit has them pretty cheap right now, I got both of the shoes for my bike for $205. I have not tried other sizes of tires.

I have tried many different sizes on my 1000R in nearly 20yrs of owning it,especially as tyres are now hard to get and found that a 150/70 rear works well with a 120/80 front,i have since converted mine to late model 17's and tyres arn't an issue.

Pretty off topic, but if it helps I went from 110/80-18 & 140/70-17 to 120/70-18 &160/60-17 on my 750nighthawk. It handled great afterwards, but all bikes are different...

Don't go with a 160, that's too wide for the rim. A 150 is ok but doesn't really give you any better handling - it's not any appreciable amount wider just taller. Stick with the stock size tires on the stock wheels.

I agree, with the 160 don't even go there, but a 150 70 is lower by about 10mm side by side to a 140 80 and with the standard wheels i found at slowed the steering slightly but overall handled very similar, and its also easier to get the 150 in aus and in fact it was the only matching pair i could get.
