Update!! In the most recent Cycle Trader, Des Plaines Honda is now advertising the Brand New 2005 silver VFR for $6995. Thats down $1000 in just a few weeks. I still think someone can go in there and make a nice deal on that very nice looking bike.

When I lived in the Chicagoland area I used to frequent DesPlaines Honda and I always found their sticker prices to be shocking especially the used machines. I couldn't see the point in beginning negotiations since they were so far out of the ball park.

On the other hand, their tire deals were excellent so I bought my Dunlops there and walked away happy!

Even with some factory back-end money going to the dealers to help move the slow iron your best deal is always going to be to buy one of the gazillion used, very low-mileage bikes for sale that some guy is trying to unload because he bought on emotion instead of logic and now he wants to cut his losses. How many times have you read the "I don't have time to ride it" line? He just realized that? Or was he in love with the IDEA of riding, and not the reality of riding? Sometimes it's a genuine issue of raising some quick capital but often it is not.

I bought an '04 with 6K on it for under $5K. It was purchased new in 9/06 as a leftover (very leftover :)
I've added Genmars, a GIVI touring shield, a V46 top case and V35 side cases, put on 2 new Sport tecs, having the stock seat reconfigured, got a new front fender from Jeff (the guy who parted out his bike recently), paid all taxes and insurance, and I'm into it for under $7K. And it's now much more comfortable and utilitarian than stock.

I ran new car dealerships for years and I speak from experience; your best deals are slightly used wheels, be they 2 or 4...

Jethro and Mainerider you guys are right on. I still think the negotiation is the fun part especially if you can leave the emotions out of it!

Cyborg, can you say "Twins"? - or - "Every replacement part I will ever need in one tidy package"!

Cannibalize a Healthy VFR, are you sick?! It would be nice to have a pair bikes but I've done the twofer deal before (85 VF700 and 87 750 Ninja), I'm just not a two bike type and in any case, it's hard enough to find time to ride just the one. I'm currently tossing about $500 a month into savings for big ticket stuff like insurance (one payment a year saves), maintenance (32k coming up) and a new bike (they gotta come out with a new VFR sooner or later) bought cash down like I did my 05. After so long in deep debt, it is very nice to buy something knowing there will be no monthly payment along for the ride...

I'm having a little fun with a car scammer on Craigs. This guy advertised a 2007 Honda Civic for four grand.

When buying a bike online or from a dealership, IMO it's a good idea to first check out how scams work using the car biz as a model. Car scams are very cleverly done so we can probably make the assumption with fair accuracy that there are bike scams as well.

This is a good read on how some car scams work:

CarBuyingTips.com - Annual Top 10 Car Dealer Scams Alert List

Anyplace in the text you see car or automobile ect. just think bike and it could happen.

Vehicle sales companies, even the most honest are not run or owned by avuncular altruists. Toss in a little dishonesty and hold on to your wallets.

Any responses concerning anyone's Uncle Ferd, Sales Manager at Moe's Previously Owned Classic Motorcycle Emporium, who is the "most honest human being in the universe" will be counter responded to with extreme prejudice.

Uncle Ferd is not the guy with the 4k Honda Civic but they may be related.

I knew DesPlaines Honda, I admired DesPlaines Honda, you sir, are no DesPlaines Honda!

In like, '05 I stopped there and was smitten by a pearl white VFR. It was left over stock and it was discounted. Stopped by again when the RWB '07 were brand new, and the pearl white beauty had just moved at a big discount (according to Mike) Visited a year later and the RWB was still sitting there like a Honda museum piece. They do move the Wings and the CBR's, but the rest of the Hondaline languishes. like most dealers it seems.
On the other hand, Maggot's message seems pitched, too perfect.
Just made my radar bleep. That's all I'm saying.
I've visited many dealerships (love looking at Hondas I can't ever own) and the models left over (VFR especially) are like a sociology experiment.
It's just fascinating and a window into human souls.

I went back to look at it again, but it was sold. I'm not sure how I feel about it. I'm happy riding the gen4, but the new one looked so nice.

    Oh well, I'm still riding a VFR.
