After doing a bit of tinkering on the bike today, I found a rats nest in the air bix! The prior owner must not have cleaned it out!! now its a bit better and less surging. Its has a little still and its around the 4800-5500 rpm range it seems.

Just to add my 2 cents worth.
With a stock Vtec engine (meaning no mods!), it seems all of them have a slight hesitation around 6000 rpm just before the vtec kicks in. The 06, and above, should kick in around 6400, although mine seems to engage around 6800.
If you roll on the throttle nice and slow and steady from 4000 until post Vtec, you will notice a lull, or hestitation, before the 'valves' engage.
Just to let you know, a Power Commander and O2 sensors eliminate all of the hestitation.
If you are getting a surge after Vtec engagement, I don't know what to look for there.
(Work on your throttle control)

Mine is an 06 with Remus, K-n-N, Pc, and O2 elims. No complaints at all.

The Remus cans are great. I put the carbon fiber on my white 06, but also did the K-n-N, PC, and O2 elims at the same time. The sound of the Remus is great and it really was a easy install. (oh, I also put the CompWerks fender elim at the same time)
If you want to smooth out the ride, you have to do the PowerCommander to really tune in the Vtec engagement, but as for sound, I'm really happy with the Remus.
Great workmanship and great V8 style sound. (Now if I can just find the money for a cat-less header, it will be 'sweet')

at 7500 RPM which is about 110 mph, I have twice felt a surge like the engine is leaning then richening, resulting in a decelerate then accelerate about every 3 seconds. Subsequent rides have not shown it again, but I haven't had a chance to do that speed on a sustained basis my mileage is about 45 so that's great.
    Cheers
    John.

I wouldn't hesitate to say that all your surging problems are emissions oriented like jetdoc just said. The fuel map is being leaned out too much for some reason. I'd check your sensors and what not and get a PC3 and program that fuel sipping CARB bull crap right the hell out of there and add in some power. You can always click a few buttons and be back to stock for those long slab trips too.

Well, called Sport tour and got an explanation about the surging. Glen told me that the bike runs super lean when your holding speed due to honda trying to achieve strict emission goals. The O2 elims, PC, and REMUS are on the way. Hats off to Glen at Sport Tour for the great explanation and good service with 3 day shipping!

I do apologize for not responding faster, I'm a pilot so I fly a lot and am never in one place long....

Ok, I feel really dumb posting this but my problem with surging has nothing to do with the VTEC, FI mapping, or a nest of any sorts. I keep my bike in a storage facility because I don't have a garage to keep her away from the elements. What happen is that I let my VFR sit to long between rides. The batter crapped out and hot bikes like VFR's need that extra juice to regulate the Fuel Injection properly (FI). I simply slapped a new battery to it and problem solved. I hope this helps!

i have a 06vfr 6k on the clock, and Im getting 42-48mpg. I do 90% highway riding. I had a 04 vfr and seemed to get slightly better fuel mileage, 45-52mpg. I got the 52mpg on a trip to Texas, all highway with very light winds. I very rarely use the v-tech, i'm sure is the reason for my good mileage. I only use the 87 octane fuel. Ive never had the bike to 120mph so cant comment on the surging.

I just took my first all freeway trip from T.O to Ottawa and I averaged 50mpg with no winds. Also cruised at around the 5800-6200rpm range in 6th (around 130km/hr I think)...

Anyways the bike was super smooth and I am very happy with my purchase!!

I average 35-40 on my '03. These things are thirsty, but then again it ain't no Rebel 250. As for the surging: I have a cheat that I swear works that I learned off another forum. Makes the bike run a little richer, hence us a little more fuel usage, but surging cured:

    1. put key in ignition. kill switch in 'on' position.
    2. turn key to on position, but do not start bike, let dash light up and
    injectors cycle.
    3. turn key off.
    4. now, hold starter button down, while at same time turning key to start
bike, let go of starter button as soon as bike starts.

    5. i was told this is supposed to fool the engine's ecu and prevent it from
going into full closed loop mode, aka using the 02 sensors to lean out the
fuel mixture and cause the dreaded surging.

I havn't had any issues yet using this method, the VTEC engages fine, and I notice a definite change in the bikes behavior at low rpm constant throttle. No more bucking or acting like it's in a headwind. Try it and see if you like it. You may lose a little mileage, but perhaps it's worth it to you. Course you can just spend the money and get PCIII and/or 02 eliminators. But why bother, this method is free and you can do it every time you start the bike for a ride with little trouble.
