I found out today that my favorite bird, my most precious, special bird ever, passed away in the night. She wasn't quite herself Friday morning when I left for SLO on Friday morning, but my parents were watching my birds so I asked them to keep an eye on her. They let me know she wasn't improving but wasn't getting worse, but at least she was eating. So Monday I took her to the vet, where they took blood, gave her fluids and antibiotics. I took her back home and that night she ate alot, but Tuesday morning ate nothing. I went home to check on her during my lunch hour and she still hadn't eaten so I took her to the vet and dropped her off so they could handfeed her and keep an eye on her. I called this morning to see how she was and she didn't make it... they DID get test results and it was liver failure. They say there wasn't much we could have done anyway. I know this is totally off-topic and many of you may not even care, but I just wanted to let you know...

Her story: I took her is as a foster for a rescue in 2004, when I lived in San Jose. We "fell in love" with each other and people who saw her with me couldn't believe how she bonded to me so quickly. After a couple weeks I adopted her. Prior to me, she had been through a couple homes, including spending a couple years in a vet's office until they found a home for her. In one of her homes she broke her leg somehow and they never took her in to a vet to have it fixed. Her leg healed incorrectly and she always wobbled, could never walk properly, so I had her cage setup with ramps and platforms so she could get around. She ended up in the rescue because in her last home, she somehow got her wing caught in something and got a really bad laceration. Her people finally took her to the vet when, after 3 days she was still bleeding. They could not afford vet bills, so surrendered her to the rescue and that is how I came to foster her. She finally ended up in a good place with me, and only had five years there. I guess better to have 5 years of a good life than none at all. Even though she went through so much, she had a spunk and energy that I've never seen in a bird before or since and she was such a special little one. I learned so much from her... if she could go through all that she did and still have a good attitude and energy, then there was nothing in my life so bad that could bring me down. She travelled with me from CA to DC to NJ then here to Vegas, the whole time riding on my shoulder... she could never see me and stay in a carrier, always had to be ON me. I will miss her calls when I come home at the end of the day... and having her on my shoulder every minute I'm home... but I knew this day would come eventually...

Sorry to hear about your loss VFRChick. I have a soft spot in my heart for animals, and I don't care if its a bird, turtle, dog or lizard, when one of them passes, it hurts. I'm sure you gave her the best 5 years of her life, and your a good person for that.

Rest assured that Woobie is in a better place, and some day you'll get to see her again. But not yet... not yet.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I unexpectedly lost a 10 week old puppy a couple months ago, its always harder when it doesn't feel like it was their time.

I completely understand the attachment and the loss. I am sorry to hear this. THIS boy truly understands the scaredness of all life forms. You have the best of Karma, my friend.
We too have a 17 year old doggie and know that day will come and that it will be very hard.
    Thanks for sharing your story.

Sorry for the loss vfrchick. I've got a 13 year old dog that we are scared every morning that today might be his day. In the past 2 years I've had to put down my first 2 dogs, one was 6, and the other was 7, and it definitely didn't feel as if it was their time. Still feel the loss.

I'm not sure what I can add to what everyone else has said, I am sincerely sorry for your loss. It is funny how attached we get to those dang animals. My wife and I lost the first dog we got together last year. I was suppose to go to class that night but when I got to class I couldn't control my emotions anymore. Thankfully I met my instructor in the hall, turned in my work and then left. I'm sure he thought I was crazy but as I said, it is funny how attached we get to those dang animals!

    Sorry to hear that chicky.
It is good that she had the time in your home.
It is also nice that she waited for you to get home before she passed on.
    Peace to you.

How sad, Prayers, What a bummer, I know how you feel. Two years back we lost our Love bird. I was always keeping a close eye on him in the last few years more than normal as these birds average life span is 15+ he was 19 years old. I hand feed him when he was hatched and brought him home the same day we brought our daughter home from being born. was a neat part of the family growing up with the kids and all, he loved to be handled and to bee-poop around on anyone's shoulder, Was a tough loss. Funny how we get attached.
