What is the best way to remove a throttle plate? I just mangled one getting it out. What is the technique for safely removing one without damage? Thanks

    Don't remove it - seriously!

The throttle plate is mounted to the throttle shaft with staked screws. That is, the screws have a slot in the end. After the screw is threaded into the shaft, the slot is widened - ensuring that the screw will not come loose.

IIRC, I had to use an impact screwdriver to get mine out. The staked screws were not to be found - plus I didn't have the tool to "stake" them.

So I looked through my bag of computer bolts and found one that fit (think it was from a laptop). I used gas-impermeable loc-tite (don't remember which one) and that throttle plate never came off again.

Tip: when re-installing the throttle plate, be mindful that one edge is chamfered to fit flush with the side of the bore when in the closed position. Install the throttle plate and tighten the screws loosely. Snap the throttle shaft several times against the bore and hold the shaft so the plate is tight against the bore. This will keep the plate centered while you finish tightening the screws.

yeah, I think I opened a can of worms. I noticed the staked screws after I finally got them out. The piece of the throttle wheel that helps secure the cable ends broke off. So I thought I'd just be able to replace the wheel. Do you know of a way to get the wheel off the shaft without removing the plate? Seems to me it can't be done. Looks like it might be better if I just replace the whole carb. Thanks
