hi, i have a 1984 Honda Interceptor 750, and the starter motor keeps dying?
I took out the starter and thought it was just time to replace, so i bought the kit, replaced all parts, tested and worked great, put it in the bike, and it will last for a few starts, then it sounds like its dying again. Im pissed, i know its the starter, so i take it out again and have it done up at a shop, put it back in the bike, again, a couple starts then dead again, brushes are all split and broken again???
any ideas why this is happening??? thanks a lot ...

    Hey

    Hey

You should mesure the amps.If the motor is taking more then 20-25 amps it is the motor. And you say you change the kit do mean then bearings, coils and coilbridge. If you have change all that and motor is still taking to much amps then there is a short circiut in the rotor or stator so then you need to change the starter motor. And if the coils are broken then you have to much amps and you would need to change the motor.Sorry

    Best regards

    Gunnar

If a reputable shop did the work, then they should have also turned the commutator and ground down the segments in between the copper contacts. I only mention this because you say that the brushes are split. There are specialized starter / alternator shops that generally do a much better job than a general bike repair place.

Definately sounds like an armature problem. Like has already been said, if the bearings are new and the contacts look clean, it may be a bent shaft. You can check this with a DTI or try rolling it on a flat surface. It might also help to bed the brushes by turning it with a hand drill at low speed. This gives the best contact possible, before applying power.

is it possible to be the starter clutch? The mechanism is not working propely, and causes the starter motor to spin extra fast blowing the starter ?? I read somewhere it may be that....

    Check : 1) Ground cable
    2) Clean starter button with an electric contact cleaner (bad contact under this button). Let us know.
