Has anyone been able to have factory hard bags mounted while using a fender eliminator? I read in a different post that the factory, dog ass ugly fender is needed in order for the hard bags to be mounted properly.

I have an '06 with a Competition Werks fender eliminator kit. I want OEM bags with out the OEM fender. Does anyone know about this?

Yes, the factory fender is needed to secure the back bolts of the EOM Saddle bag mounts. (4 Bolts, two on each side).

I have to put my factory fender back on, hope you kept it. If not, I am sure there are a few on this forum for sale cheap.

Thanks for the reply. There must be a way to accomplish this without having to go back to the plastic rear fender!

Any chance you can provide some close up pics of this area? In your opinion is a solution achievable since you have already gone through this installation?

    Thanks again,

    Gunzer

No. The factory fender is not necessary to mount the bags. I have the factory bags mounted using only the factory fender bracket and license plate light. The license plate covers most of the mounting bracket and looks OK to me. Obviously removing the rear fender will cause some issues you may or may not want to deal with but only you can make that decision. Like water control and rear side and tail reflectors. Using this method there is nothing extra to buy although you already have a fender eliminator. I'll take some pics and post them for you.

I trimmed my stock fender rather than replace it. I removed the plate light, moved the plate up to the tail light, and trimmed the plastic with a box cutter. I am aware the 6th gen is different, but you may look into it.
The result is removal of the donkey tail while keeping the structure intact.

All you need is the hardware located behind the fender.
The ugly plastic fender unbolts easy enough.
check out the photo labeled "Tail2" in my Mods photo album.
All I did was remove the fender, spray paint the brackets black and reinstall.
In the photo you can see the main bracket, the license mount, and just behind the license mount is the bracket the bags attach to.

    Pics as promised

I took the plate off for you to see what's in there. Bags and mounting brackets are in place. All OEM components. Dog simple.

Wow thanks. Couldn't ask for much more help than those pics. I have the bags as well and didn't know an eliminator wouldn't work, looks like I know what to do now.

Thanks again, people like you really make this community great and allow others to enjoy their bikes all they can.

You can mount the license plate up between the mufflers and have the OEM hardbags. I mounted my plate to the metal bracket that drops down for the brace between the side racks. I took off the complete plastic rear fender. I'll have to take a better pic to show. It looks good and nothing hanging down.

scubalong, took me awhile to come up with the color scheme. I'm happy with the outcome. I was going for something different. The left side had a bit of road rash from the previous owner, so after 2 months of body work and paint, it paid off.
