    Hello to you all,

Sorry for my first post being a problem but Im gonna need some help here I think...!

Have just bought a VFR800 2001 Euro import which has some interesting history to it! As far as I can tell it was a german import and all the bits have been swapped over into a UK frame.

After various woes by the previous owner trying to get it to go, he removed the original loom assuming HISS issues and replaced it with a 1998 Non-HISS. Problems persisted so he sold it to muggins here!

In order to give me a starting point I have restored the bike to its HISS loom and here is what happens.

Turn the key on and the FI light illuminates - if you try the starter, eventually the fuel pump runs, but keeps running as if its priming but for too long. Sure enough it will then run and run filling up all the cylinders with petrol!

You can repeat this and the same thing happens so Im reckoning its not due to loose wires or dodgy connections.

So whats going on? Could the previous owner have connected some plugs wrong causing the injectors to stay open or something? Or could the injectors be shafted and staying open?

I have done the jump wire on the diagnostic plug - theres no data stored in the memory.

    Any help gratefully received!

    Geoff

That's so flippin' weird. Yes...the first thing is to get the diagram and make sure everything is plugged in where it's supposed to be...especially up in the front cowl...I've seen BA sensors plugged into tailight relays which doesn't work well. You might want to check the cam and ignition pulse generators as the self diagnostics don't cover them. Is it possible you have the wrong ECM?

Howdy Geoff. Question, does HISS stand for Honda Ignition Security System?

sounds like either a fried ecm, short in the wiring, or like stated above just wires pluged into wrong receptors. you have got your hands full i wish you the best of luck.

    Its pretty weird isnt it.

Ive got to investigate the throttle bodies tonight to check out for bad connections etc.

I went through the main loom and labelled every single connector according to the wiring diagram in the workshop manual and everything has plugged in where it should be.

THe only exception is the 10 pin grey connector which connects the main loom to the engine loom which I have assumed is correct and just plugged that in.

I wonder if the injectors have been plugged in incorrectly?

You may try to troubleshoot an obvious symptom of the problem...like why doesn't the fuel pump run with the keyed ignition like a fuel injected Honda should...as this is a relatively simple circuit.

That's a good guess, Derstuka...I'm not sure what the acronym stands for off hand. I read up on it awhile back but I don't remember the details. The only bike I'm aware it was used on was the Rune.

this may sound wierd. but did they make chipped keys for motorcycles in 01? if it issthe security system like stuka was asking without the proximity chip it aint gonna start

    THanks for the replies!

Im almost certain its not the HISS (Honda Ignition Security System) - I have the correct matching key and transponder and ECU.

Its gotta be a fault with an engine sensor or something.

A little update on what happens:

Sitting there left alone with the ignition on it makes a series of regular "click"s and "plup"s with about 15ish seconds between each click. THe "click" is the fuel pump relay which seems to pulse the fuel pump for a split-second - dont know what the "plup" noise is - sounds resonant like its in a tube so throttle bodies I guess.

After these funny noises the fuel pump runs for ages (FI light out) whilst the key symbol flashes on the clocks.

Then the fuel pump stops - the key symbol goes out and the FI light comes back on again!

I doubt that help really but thought Id drop that in there!

have you tried to jump the starter solinoid? you may get it to turn over. I would put a meter on every electrical connection that has to do with the ignition and check for proper voltage and proper resistance. you may have to get a new brain. or one that you know works.

Just to clarify the start turns over but just doesnt fire - all the injectors seem to be pulsing but just no spark from any one of the spark plugs.

Engine and head are earthed ok by the way.

Read up a bit on HISS for the Rune (only US bike I'm aware it was used on). It is a Transponder/radio key/ECM system...and on the Rune it's tied in with the steering lock as well so it automatically locks and unlocks with the correct key.

I also noticed that the HISS system has a self diagnostic feature. Could this be the flashing key that comes up on your dash? Perhaps you should count the number of blinks and see if it's consistent...maybe your bike's trying to tell you something. Do you have a shop manual for your bike that covers troubleshooting the HISS?

Honda's PGM FI is designed so that only essential items will make the bike not start and run...that would be fuel pump, injectors, the two pulse generators, coils, and of course the main power ciruit to the ECM throught the BA sensor, main relay, kill switch, and fuel cut relay. Other sensors for the fuel injection would flash your FI light but your bike would still likely run.
