    Hello,

First off I'd like to intro myself. My name is Konrad and I'm a fairly new member to VFR World. I love Hondas have two cars and just got a Honda bike.

Anyways I just rebuilt my VF500F. Replaced valves in the engine, cleaned up all the parts, re-adjusted the valve clearance, re-timmed the bike, adjusted the tentioner and I even got a new paint job. The reason behind this, a loud tapping noise in the engine (sounded like front cylinder) caused right after an over-rev.

I checked the valves and one out of all them didn't push in easily if at all. Pulled it out and found out it was bent so it got replaced. Put the whole bike back together (everything fit in nicely) but then I had a really hard time starting her, almost impossible. Finally she started but I could still hear the tapping noise, not as loud but still noticeable.

Could anyone tell me what I've done wrong?

Hi Konrad, welcome to the group. The hard starting sounds like the timing might be off. is the tapping noise kind of hollow? Was only one valve bent? did you check the other valves? Reg has a tapping sound in VF500 he is working on. sympathy tapping? hmmm......

Only one valve was bent from what I could tell. It was the only one I couldn't push in, all the others felt the same. I thought it could be the timing because when I start it and put my hand against the muffler it feels like it's actually sucking it in, tho I checked the timing over a million times. Could a loose tensioner cause the timing to jump?

    Thanks,
    Konrad

Actually just checked, she starts easy and there is no sucking on the exhaust.. Started nicely actually just the annoying ticking noise up front.

    Any ideas?

the ticking is the lifters....wiat....V-4's dont have lifters. I keep forgetting that and reverting to SBC mode. lol did you make sure all the adjusters are tight?

Their as tight as they get without striping the screwe. Gets faster the higher it revs. Is there some kind of break in? Could that be the deal or is that not likely?

It's not too loud but I hear it, others have said they dont hear it but then again my yosh cans are pretty loud so I'm not 100% sure on the volume of the tick. Compression on the cylinders feels close to the same it was before the problem originally started.

    Thanks,
    Konrad

Ok, the cam gear came loose and 3 of 4 rocker arms just snapped. Guess my question now is if I do get a pair of new rocker arms do I have to crack the case and remove all the little metal parts or is there a way to remove them without taking her apart?

    Thanks

Konrad man something really bad just happened and I would expect that you had piston to valve contact to break a rocker.

You had better check the valves and the piston crowns for evidence of contact. This could turn into a full top end tear down.:frown:

I know this isn't what you wanted to hear but I hate to see you spend $$ on parts when there is more involved and the new parts although you do need them are only a fraction of the damage you now need to deal with.

    Sorry!
