    Hi all,

Thought I might give a heads up on my ad that is now running on this site.

If you have had electrical problems you probably need to cool down
the regulator. Best way to do that is by attaching a fan over the cooling fins.

This is not a cure-all but it is a major step.

If you are interested....click on "Marketplace" and then click on "Classifieds" for more information and photos.

The cost of the fan is $13.00 plus $3.00 shipping cost to the 48 states. Canada shipping cost is $12.40 plus $13.00.

For simplicity you can email me directly to: porsche.bob@sbcglobal.net

    Thanks for looking,

    Bob

For the guys who are reluctant to spend fifteen bucks for a muffin fan, the new ones that are 2-3 bucks are pretty good or a used computer supply usually has a bin full of those puppies for about half a buck apiece.

This fix was "invented' by a guy from OZ in about 1991. Wiring is straight into the taillight circuit.

Using Velcro to attach the fan to the R/R ain't a good idea..

One minor technical error is that all the R/R's did not have fins. Another "fix" was to apply a paste heat sink to the base of the R/R. Again, almost any computer supply will stock same.

Best fix IMO is to just buy one and stick it under your seat. For the guys who have never had one crap out,the bike stops.

In a service bulletin from Harley-Davidson it seems they were having the same basic problem. The fix involved the use of a fan and radiator assemlbly from a 68 Yugo.

I agree that the best fix is for the updated one mounted on a plate with fins. The internal resistance that the unit see creates the heat and having a small fan on it ....well you might as well just try and blow out a forest fire. But who knows it may help extend the life of the unit if you do alot of traffic driving. Does the fan push or pull and how many CFM's - questioned answered in your class post.

Radio Shack is currently having a sale on aluminum heatsinks and CPU fans. They are uber cheap, and 12v DC.

I am running a Pentium 3 fan on my bike, and it's wired to the license plate circuit, not the taillight.

    Regulators and charging

    Hi Folks,
I was reading my Clymers Manual for 86-97VFRs and under the section about battery charging it says:
"Never connect a bettery charger to the battery with the battery cables still connected. Always disconnect the battery. During the charging procedure the charger may destroy the diodes within the voltage regulator/ rectifier if the cables were left connected." (page 73)
This is under the section for maintenance free batteries. I have never disconnected the battery for charging on any bike I've owned, but I found this interesting. It does not say to do this for a non-maintenance free battery.
    Any thoughts on this?

    Cheers!

    Craig
