Hey guys and gals, I can't see any obvious way to raise the gas tank up on my '97. I've got the rear plastics off, and I can see the bolt at the rear of the tank that it apparently pivots on, but how is it secured at the front of the tank? I've got a Lockhart Phillips tank bra, and i would like to route the cord that secures it behind the little tabs that the tank rests on, instead of in front. I would also like to check out the air filter condition. Any help is appreciated...

You just have to lift the back up and pull it back, so the tongue comes out of the slots. If you have trouble lifting it, make sure the bushing for the rear bolt is centred. Don't forget to shut the petcock off, before disconnecting the lines. ;)

Yes, shut the petcock off, disconnect the electrical connector that goes to the fuel gauge, disconnect the three rubber hoses, then lift the tank up and pull it out to the rear.

Thanks for the replies - I got it lifted up enough to thread the cord under the rubber pads on the side of the tank. I think I'll wait until the tank is lower on fuel before I pull it all of the way off....

AS a guy it's your responsibility to get a bra off at any time, so just pull and rock the tank backwards a few inches and she'll slide off

    oh, yeh..

And the rubber bushes on the front mounting WILL fall off down the front of the airbox.

Also, make sure you dont lift the rear of the tank too high, as the paint on the front lip of the tank can chip if it hits the frame.
In fact, if you don't need to remove the tank completely you can simply take the fuel line off where it meets the inline filter, and unplug the electrical sender wire and simply turn the tank towards the rear and sit it where the seat goes.Watch that the foam under the tank doesn't get damaged.
