I was out looking at bike today, for no real reason, and one of the dealers had a used '05 for sale. So i went to have a sit on it, and wow what a difference from my '93. First thing i noticed was the seat, i don't see how anyone could keep the stock seat on there, and this one had 22k miles on it. Although it wasn't as bad as the Ducati 748, had to check twice if there actually was a seat on there. I don't know the dimensions but it also felt a lot bigger, i know that tail section has gotta be twice as big.

Anyway, it just got me thinking how the different generations compare to each other. To me it seemed that the '05 was going with more of the touring side of the sport-tourer compared to mine. So how do they compare when ridden?

You have my favorite gen and paint. That being said you must ride a gen 5 or 6.The refined version will change as it has me.I still ride my gen 2 but only to charge the battery and to enjoy the sound.

I don't think there are many who have had a chance to ride both generations? I have a 3rd Gen since new... and would absolutely LOVE to take a 6th Gen for a 100 mile cruise out to the Lake Michigan shore to catch the sunset and a few ice cream scoops... then fly that 800 back to the garage..... I'm very interested to test all the 6th Gen advancements.......since the already awesome and amazing 3rd Gen. I agree the 6th Gen is more advanced toward touring... but I think that has been an important aspect of the VFR's evolution. Many want more hp and lighter weight... I for one... would appreciate the solid sport Touring...

From what I have read, I think your assessment is correct. The newer bikes have made a gradual move towards touring a bit. At least when compared to the early VFRs. In the beginning, the VFR was far from Honda's race bike in terms of development but as most bikes (except Harley) do it has evolved into something quite a bit more refined. It still has a lot of soul and you still know you are riding a motorcycle, though. It's just become polished.

Funny Richard hasn't jumped on this one, he has a 4th which is close to a 3rd and he rides both back to back and could tell you that yes the 3rd-4th is sportier than a 6th and yes the 6th is more refined, not so sure about the polish though, and yes I've rode em back to back and I too feel the larger ride and the way it carries it's weight, not sure but I think it is heavier by a few pounds but the scales say different?? so must be how it carries it. I'm not impressed with the V-tec, I could take it or leave it, only thing to me on the down side is it just makes it more trick$$$ to some, to me it's not a necessary item, just something Honda threw on cause they could. A 3rd or 4th run just fine and IMO sound way better than the 6th but that's just me. LOL oh yea then there's the brake thing ....

VTEC was designed for emissions regulations, not throttle jockeys.

To me, it seems that the with advancement, the VFR has become more capable with each new generation. I have a 2nd Gen, had a 5th Gen and have a 6th Gen. The 6th Gen is just that - the most refined and to me, the most capable. I love my older bikes, but if I want a spirited ride, then I'm taking my '07.

imho 5th Gen seems more sport-touring and 6th gen seems more touring-sport. It's a fine line no doubt.

you can call me biased if you want:rolleyes:

    yep i'd agree with that.

operating the 4th Gen & 6th gen back to back as i frequently do the key differentials are physical size & power.

The 6G feels a more powerful bike, and VTEC amplifies that.
However the 4g 750 is a smaller tighter package than the 6g. i took the 6g thru a very tight windy road that went up a hill range and back down the other side recently. this found its limits nicely. you really had to work that sucker hard and ultimately i had to back off as it had a tendancy to push into the corners and want to run out over the centerline (understeer). i could feel the extra size of the bike and as RVFR states its feels heavier even tho its not, i guess your more conscious of the physical size.
ive tried hanging on to my mates fireblades in the twisties ands it just too hard , but every where else were equal and i know theyve had enough long before i have. Ride position counts for something in the real world.
just checkout the clip ons on a blade compared to the risers on the VFR.!

however its not all doom & gloom here for the 6G, on the open road its a better platform, more room, more accomodations and of course things like VTEC & dual CBS. as a touring mount its way better.as an example i have to do a ride tomorrow 2 up so its the 6G for that job. better for rider & passenger.

having previously owned the 5 g (twice) and currently using a 4 & a 6G i can see & feel the evolution process. and each succesive model has led to a more refined touring oriented bike. will be interesting to see what direction honda takes it next.

as for the 6G seat.....my butt lasts about 200km before the complaints dept starts backing up. so i tend to ride it in 200 km stints. after about 3 stints
its done...a better seat would be a good idea.
