all i can find is the online service manual for up to 02. it looks similar to the 4th gen. there is no specific chain and sprocket r&r section in the service manual. i piece the info together from the clutch section and in maintenance section of the manual. if you do alot of your own work a honda service manual is invaluable. i bought one for my bike right after i got it and has came in handy alot. just a thought for future projects.

Well, I got the RK XSO chain and steel sprocket kit. After being told just how much the Honda shop wanted to put the kit on, I reviewed the service manual , decided it wasn't hard to do (cue IMPENDING DISTASTER OVERTURE) and bought a chain breaker tool kit. Last night, I opened up the VFR, inspected some items like the Nautilus horn's mount then started the swapout. I got the clutch secondary piston and drive sprocket cover off and loosened all the related bolts and nuts no problem then started on the chain (cue CLUSTERFUCK MUSIC). Over the next 2 hours I broke all three break pins in the breaker kit, two screwdrivers, a pair of vicegrips, a hacksaw blade, 6 fingernails and my temper, afterwhich I got a big pair of boltcutters from work and had that chain broken in 30 seconds. After using the boltcutter to cut the old chain into confetti, used Semtex and C4 to clean up 4 years of chain wax, the sprockets went on easy. Problem with the chain is, they sent the clip style master link instead of the rivet style. I went ahead and used it but am worried, should I replace it with a rivet link or am I ok as is? Everything bolted back up good (after a mixup or four with the long bolts) and the chain and sprocket's plain styling actually looks very nice...

One very important tool other than the chain press/rivet kit is a dremel-like tool. If you don't have one see if one of your buddies has some kind of handheld grinder tool.

This grinder tool is to be used for grinding down the rivet heads. The problem is that with just a chain breaker tool you'll end up breaking the tool not the chain. Oh, and a nice bonus is to use the grinder tool to just cut the old chain.

Who needs a dremel tool when one has a bolt cutter with 24 inch handles?

I wouldn't use a clip master link, but I'm a by-the-book kind of guy. If you're gonna use the clip link, at least make sure it's pointing the right way; the open end should be toward the wheel when the link is on the upper run of the chain.
