Chromed 99 VFR and loving it!

I am new to this forum, so I will give a little introduction of myself. My name is Ian McGiffen. I am 20 years old and live in Southern Indiana. I attend college at the University of Evansville majoring in mechanical engineering. I am currently co-oping at Toyota, which helped with the funds to buy my new toy. I just purchased a 99 VFR after doing about a year's worth of research trying to decide which bike I wanted and waiting for a good deal on a great bike. I had a 1984 Honda Shadow 700 for a year before I bought this bike and put 3000 miles on it. I have only had the VFR 3 weeks and have already put 1500 on it. Mainly because I took a trip to northern Indiana for a family reunion and stopped at Purdue to see a friend.
I absolutely love this bike and am glad that I waited for the right one to come along. My bike has 36000 miles on it, but you'd never know and being a Honda I am not too concerned. The guy that had it before me tore it apart in 2000 (not wrecked) and had everything chromed, even the frame! He took amazingly good care of the bike, so I am not worried about the mileage. I am going to continue taking amazing care of this bike since it is my new baby. How often do most of you change the oil? Service manual says every 5000, but I was planning on doing every 3000. What do you think? I am pretty meticulous about stuff like that. Also, any recommendations on oil? I use Pennzoil in my 84 Porsche 944 but I will probably use Mobil 1 in the bike since that is what the previous owner used.

welcome to the forum and sweet bike. i wish mine was chromed out. although cleaning it would be a chore, i still would want mine like that.

 

I can't figure out why my picture doesn't show up with my post like yours does. I loaded one to my profile. I guess you looked at my bike through the photo gallery since it didn't pop up on my post. How do I fix this?

 

Thanks for throwing the picture in there! I love this forum. Can't believe you guys have responded already. I get the feeling I could become addicted to this forum, which may not be good considering I am at work. I was on lunch break earlier though.

 

Hey IM. Welcome to the group and congrats on the new ride. It looks great. I don't haev a preference for oil in motorcycles, I usually just used what I had, but if I had to choose, there aren't many I would use. I here Amsoil is good though I have never used it. I used to use Penzoil or Bel Rey in my motocross bike, depended on how hard up for cash I was at the time or where I was when I was buying oil. Brand of oil is really personal preference and previous use experience. Again, Welcome to the club

That's purdy! Only thing I don't particularly care for is the red double-bubble, but that's nit-picking. How much u pay for her?

Oil.....I use Amsoil ( didn't know they make a semi-syn, mine is full syn ). A AMF'er on budget told me about it. Been running over 20K with changes at least every 5K and it comes out of the drain beautiful every time. Ran out and had to run Honda for one change, and after 3K it looked and felt worse than the AMSoil at 5K. Almost seems a waste to change it at 5K, but @ $8 qt, it's cheap enough to keep it fresh..especially if u ride hard.

I've tried other syns on other bikes. Had a late 80's GSR and think I had Redline in that. Man, that stuff was $15 qt back then. I don't think you can get any better that AMSoil..certainly not for the price. I buy direct from their website since it's hard to find.

Red Windscreen took me a while to get used to, but now I like it. I am getting ready to put the taller zero gravity windscreen on it because I am riding down to Florida on her next weekend. Almost 1000 miles one way!!! Riding down on next Wednesday evening, Thursday morning. Then riding back on Sunday. Am I completely crazy for trying this. I rode her 800 miles the first weekend I had her on a Saturday/Sunday combination and wasn't too tired. What's the farthest anyone has ridden in a day?

Amsoil seems to be the census, so I may have to order some. Is there ANY place that carries it?

Good looking bike with a decent price, especially for the mods you have there.

I'm in IN too. I took a half day off last Wednesday and tried to thrash my new Metzelers around Bloomington and Nashville with a couple of guys from work. They're Star and HD cruiser guys, so I did a lot of waiting along the way. :smile: You're in a good place for riding...enjoy!

that recently hashed through a lot of opinions. I think if you just change it regularly with any quality brand oil you'll be fine. Mine gets changed once at the end of each season, if it needs it or not.:biggrin:
