Hey guys I'm having some trouble trying to find a good place to install the ballasts on my 99 5th Gen! If anybody has installed HID lighting can you tell me or post some pictures showing the best place to install the ballasts! Also one more question and that is how long did it take any of you to install your HID's? I have a Hi-Low H4 HID kit, so I have all the stuff that is needed to install, I'm just wondering about where to put the ballasts. Taking into consideration I do alot of riding at night and long trips and get caught sometimes in the rain!

    Cheers

Take a look at my installation: Picasa Web Albums - Mike

Using a relay harness will give you the flexibility to put the ballasts anywhere you wish. DO NOT mount in front of the radiatior (don't ask how I know). Mounting to the frame makes removing the fairings a lot easier. I wound up zip-tying a pair to the frame under the fairings, and sticking the second pair in the little space above the signal bulbs.

Post here if you are having any issues.

Here's mine, left side frame. Use industrial velcro with a VERY small amount of Gorilla Glue on the adhesive. That way I can remove the ballast and put it back with ease...

All the other installs I've done have been the same method, but velcro'd to side plastics.

Ok, fill me in. Mine's been in front of my radiator for almost 2 years now. Maybe not an issue with the 5th gens?

My ballast melted and became deformed from the heat. I'm surprised that yours lasted. It may very well be a gen thing. Well, we are one big, happy HID family.

Wait a moment! From your pic, your ballast is beside the radiator, not mounted on the inside of the fairing, enjoying every last bit of heat going to/from the radiator. It's not a gen issue.

Hells ya, I use the premium Korean ballasts, none of the that $14.99 shit from eBay.

None of the 7 HID's I've put in the last 3 years have failed. Haven't even had to replace a single bulb yet.

They're premium Chinese ballasts. I've been using HIDs for 6 years with no failures or issues (except the melting).

SLOav8r, my ballast was being slow-roasted in front of the radiator. Yours is mounted beside the radiator. I have one beside the rad now, with no issues.

Here is a pic of why it melted: Picasa Web Albums - Mike - HID and Frame.... I say it's self-explanatory.

On my 6th gen, there was enough space between the headlights behind the front fairing to stuff the ballasts and wires, etc. Been working fine for a month now, no problems.

Should have taken some pics.. on my 6th gen i purchased the digital balast kit.. i was able to stick one behind the abs computer on the metal carrier and one over on the ECU side same way.. the igniter which is down the line from the ballast is tucked into the wiring between the headlights.
