Not that the Uni Filters are bad, I'm just on a budjet and found a good deal on all four filters for $20 shipped. Go with whatever deal you find.

The boots are held down by the original intake box net I believe it is called. If I remember correctly the intake box is attatched to this carb net then the net is attatched to the carbs holding them together and the boots tightly against the carbs. I cut the old metal net up so that there was just enough metal to hold the carbs together and to support the carb overflow tubes. If you look carefully you can see the butchered net in the pics above. I may even have a pic of the net just after I cut it up; I'll look around. I still plan to go back and polish up the edges and what not but it works fine for now. I then attatched the pods directly to the boots cutting the top lip off the boot so the pods would fit as far down as possible so they wouldnt hit the tank. I couldnt tighten the metal straps too tight on the boots or they would cave in so I got them tight enough then filled in all the gaps with high temp silicone (there wasnt much in the way of gaps thankfully). I did all this because I had a second set of carbs and a net so everything is fully reversible so just be sure it is what you want to do before you start cutting everything up. This summer I will be able to comment on how everything works out performance wise once I rejet, synch and all that good stuff but for now I'm running lean with the pods on and the butchered exhaust.

I have never used a MIG before but I have messed around with a TIG a little and it was just too tedious for me to want to keep messing with it. I just need to do little jobs here and there and some frame work so the easy of wire feeding is more practical. I pretty much never have an idea of what I'm doing with anything and just experiment until I get it right. Best of luck with the bike.

That's nice. Do you have the eBay seller's ID still? Maybe I'll pick up a set of these myself!

I think the seller shut down shop a while ago but I'm not sure. I always meant to go back and order more filters for other projects bikes I have. Anyway, I found a set of 4 for $31 shipped to the US. They are 50mm which is what I think I used (just under 2" in diameter which is what the boots are when the top edge is cut off). Below is the link for the auction.

eBay Motors: Honda Kawasaki Suzuki Yamaha SYM 50mm Air Filter 4pcs (item 110340083665 end time Feb-18-09 04:52:26 PST)

And below is the link for another auction of 3 filters for $19.45 shipped with a diameter of 52mm. I would email the seller asking if you could add another filter for an extra $4 and see if maybe he has them in a smaller size or 52mm might work depending on how you approach the set up.

eBay Motors: YAMAHA XS750 XS850 Chrome Pod Air Filters Set of 3 NEW (item 200304356507 end time Feb-28-09 11:09:33 PST)

I would measure the opening of the filters I have but it is such a pain to take everything off the bike just to get to the carbs and the next time I do that I plan to take care of rejetting, radiator flush, valves, etc but I wont be doing it until the weather warms up a little.

Oh, and I should mention that the coils are mounted to the carb net. At first I cut around the coil mounts so that I could still keep them attatched to the carb net but the mounts were thin and broke off so with a little metal I had lying around I made 'C' type brackets to mount them to the carbs themselves. Looking closely you can see this in the photo. It has been a while since I did it but I believe the coils are grounded via the carb mount so you have to mount them to a good ground of some kind.

tinman i'll be welding a bar across where the intake was and if it needs ground, it should have it.

i ordered this today in 12x16x5/8" for 17 and change. i'd rather not chop up the intake and i'll make the plates again with short stacks like jamie said originally. we'll see again, how this goes.

Great thread. I am also thinking about doing this to me vf750f. Will the addition of these pods cause issues with a stock exhaust and stock jets?

Also, I think I am going to do it like you did, by cutting the alum that holds the boots on, then attach the filters to the inside of the boots. You said 50mm filters will fit inside the boots?

Yes, if you run pods you will need to rejet. With the stock exhaust you'll need to go up at least 2 sizes. With a full exhaust it's anyones guess, probably start with maybe 10 steps and go from there. to give you an idea, on my twin I went from 112 to 147.5 with a full 2-1 system and pods.
