Progressive reworked the language in my motorcycle insurance policy for the coming year. It doesn't affect me much, but I'm wondering about some you you guys who do track days. (In South Dakota we really don't have any tracks.) Essentially they changed the policy from excluding organized racing from their policy, to excluding any activity on a track. This would include practicing for racing. Do track hobbyists carry a separate policy for that? I ask just out of curiosity...I don't race or spend time at a track.

Now maybe I read my policy wrong. I know there are insurance guys who visit this site - feel free to tell me how I'm wrong.

In other news, they automatically cover $3K of bolt-on accessories as part of the policy. Good stuff for me.

usually racing is "timed events" some ins cos view track days as "rider skills improvement" so as long as there is no timing/racing going on, you are usually OK.

I havent had reason to call insurance on this related to my track exploits...

I have never specifically looked into but it was more or less "understood" that you didn't file a claim on an accident at the track.

I don't think that you are wrong. I recently tried to get collision coverage through Progressive for my new track bike and was told that I could get it, but that it would not cover any damage that occured on the track. Period. Not very helpful for me, as it's not street legal and won't be driven anywhere else.

I wouldn't be surprised if other companies are including similar language in their policies. The insurance companies are a little behind the curve (no pun intended), but with the increasing popularity of track riding I'm sure they're starting to get a handle on loss rates and are increasinly interested in limiting their exposure to claims from this. From what I've seen at track days a lot of hardware gets tossed around, relative to the number of people and miles being ridden. Thankfully it's a safe, controlled environment and the crashes generally don't seem to result in serious injury, but a lot of expensive equipment seems to get trashed. And if it's insured, you know who's paying.
