Ugh! Even though I'm really good about keeping my chain lubed and cleaned ordinarily, I noted some little rust pits on the surface of the chain today. Other than being cosmetically irritating, is there any problem from running a chain in such a condition?

Is this rust pits on the side plates? or rust dust that comes from the pins wearing? the dust wipes off, the rust pits won't, if it's rust pits I probably wouldn't worry much less the looks value, if it's the dust, start saving for a new chain.

So you don't think pitted metal is a bad thing? Seems like that would affect the strength of the chain at some point. I guess it would depend on how bad the pitting is.

IMO if there is insufficient lube/protection to keep the outside of the chain from rusting I would switch from what I was using to something else.
