Hi there, Any help/advice for the following would be much appreciated. Attempted to start my VFR 750 FV (UK model 97) after a 3 week lay-off. She only seems to fire on 2 cylinders and quickly cuts out. Have checked carbs and plugs, all of which seem ok. The fuel relay seemed favourite for failure, as fuel was not being fed through by the pump. When my husband bypassed it the fuel pump worked ok. However, we put in a brand new one, only for it to fail instantly. On further investigation, my husband finds he has two live feeds, where the wiring diagram indicates he should only be getting one. We're awaiting delivery of a salvage CDI unit from a breakers, but if anyone has any ideas in the meantime I'd appreciate it.

The fuel pump relay is triggered by active spark from the ignition system. So...one of the first things to check when your pump won't energize is for spark. Did the bike start and run on all four when the pump relay was bypassed? The only time you're likely to hear the pump run is if the carbs are dry, so if you didn't drain the fuel out of them, the pump isn't going to be called on for fuel...or were they dry to start with? I'm not convinced your basic troubleshooting is pointing you in the right direction.

It's not unheard of to foul a spark plug when starting a "stored" bike. I'm not sure how you "checked" them out. Best thing to do is buy four new ones, replace them, and check for spark on each cylinder while doing so.

Fuel pump relays and CDI's are two of the most reliable components on your bike. They are usually about the last items I would expect you find problems with. Then again...anything's possible.

IF you have sparks on all 4, your CDI is OK.....
