I was hoping for a cheaper way out. The only HID I could find were the little PIAA that go on the fork. Is there another way to do it?

If you do get around to installing those little driving lights, you may be sorely disappointed with the results after all the time, effort, money, parts, and switches you will have put into the project. Those little fork lights are NOT HID. They are cheap halogens with blue-tinted glass. If better visibility is what you are looking for, those will not work.

You can get HIDs for 100 bucks. Both bulbs can be configured light up together when running both Hi and Lo, running off a harness. The bulbs will actuate forward in Hi to project the light further down the road. Like Scuba said, it makes a huge, huge difference.

The factory wires are too thin to give you the best results from Silverstars, PIAA, and the rest of those "brighter" bulbs. You can go the cheaper route, but consider yourself lucky if you are able to get them to last up to a year. The One of the Silverstars I had on my bike failed within 5 months. HIDs last a long, long time. Don't take my word for it; ask others in this forum about their opinions of HID.

PM me if you are interested. I can recommend a good vendor, and have posted purchasing and installation info on another thread in this forum.

If you do go with the less expensive route, I like the PIAA Extreme White Plus. Very good...I use em in my 6th gen and mt Toyota Tacoma.

I also support the PIAA extreme white plus bulbs.

PIAA actually makes H4 bulbs designed for powersports, which are vibration resistant.

    http://www.piaa.com/Powersports/bulbs.html

Piaa also makes bulbs specific for honda motorcycles, which fit perfect, and require no modification.

Do the PIAA bulbs cause any issue with overheating or meltdown?

    That is my biggest worry.

    Thanks

Yup...they use the same wattage but produce about TWICE as much light. They do "more with less" just like VFR's and VFR riders!
No extra heat as far as I can tell...I have run em in several apps and never had problems with heat. (They'll be lighting up the night tonight as I head to the mountains in my Tacoma)
    Rock on!

I just wanted to mention, I am now using the PIAA H4 Twin Beam. Its a bulb that has a very slight yellow coating on the upper half of the bulb, and no coating on the lower half. It is hands down the best bulb I have ever used. And with the bulb adapters I bought from this guy, I am Super Happy.

H4 PLASMA YELLOW XTRA TWIN BEAM, part #14561. Buy two, as they come as a single bulb.

I was looking at yellow or the extreme white plus and really cannot decide. I drive a lot at night so I am not sure which is a better way to go. Anything must be better than stock bulbs

Did you get the regular bulbs or the anti vibe power sports ones? I am not sure if the extra $$$ is needed.

Also, seeing you have them installed, how much of the front faring did you have to take apart to get them in? I do not want to take apart any more than I have to.

    Thanks

I will try and post pics when I get some free time at night time.

As for install, it sucks. I had fat hands and had to take a good amount of crap off.

It is my opinion that HID's have more than just the disadvantage of cost, they also add a bunch of extra weight and wiring to an already porky machine with questionable factory wiring. The HID's carry too much excess baggage with them to convince me that this is the way to go.

If you are careful when handling the PIAA bulbs, and make absolutely sure that you don't get any fingerprints or other contamination on the bulb itself, they should provide a good service life, with an increase in safety, for the investment. At around $107.00 for the low beam H7's, they provide a great return for your money.

Here are some photos of my Piaa's.

These are with just one installed on the drivers side. On the passenger side there is a APC h4 bulb that is a white color with almost no hint of blue.

The new bulb is clearly more yellow, which I LOVE.

These were taken with the bike off, so the intensity will be better once the bike is running.

Comparing to APC bulbs I had in:

    With bulb adapter before trimming:

You can easily see the color difference.
