HI, who has figured out what ventless battery will fit in the 86-87 interceptors. Thanks

Hi there, great modern battery is sold by ebatteriestogo.com . Part number 40650 (model UB14A-A2). I ordered mine from Larry Parker and had it within a week. Total price with shipping was just under $60. Battery is sealed and has held a charge very well since last year when I bought it. Best solution I've found so far, i tried numerous offerings from checker, autozone and napa and none fit quite right. Battery is approx. 1/8 inch too thick for the hinged battery hold-down on the side of the compartment, removing the rubber spacers from the hinged piece and bending it very slightly near the hinge works perfectly. Let me know if you have any questions.

Just thought I would share this info... I am new to this forum and just recently purchased a nice 86 VFR750. Always wanted one... In any case, replacing the original battery with a modern high perf maintenance free unit was high on my list. After some searching and checking, I found an excellent solution.. the Yuasa YTX14AH-BS. This battery is just a little taller and deeper than the OEM spec YB12A-B, has the same charge specifications and Amp-Hour capacity, and delivers much more cranking current. This is also a fully sealed unit so no more vent hose required.

The YTX14AH-BS is the same width, a little taller, and a little deeper however it fits very nicely. The front battery hinged door requires slight modification to close due to the extra depth but no problem. You can simply make a very slight bend close to the hinge. Due to the extra depth, I also use a washer between the door and the flange where the bolt attaches to batt box. The YTX14AH-BS is specified for a number of 84-86 Hondas, such as the Magna, Shadow, and CB650. It is readily available and can be ordered from most any bike shop.

Why do you want a ventless battery?

I use a YB12A-A. It is the EXACT same size, and most places will have it in stock. The only down side is the vent tube is on the other side, and it must be relocated. (Very easy to do, takes less than 5 minutes)

There were a number of advantages of the newer battery that were attractive. The lack of a vent eliminates (practically) the need to check liquid levels. While small, evaporative loss of water does occur as part of normal charging. The vent line also typically contributes to some amount of corrosive damage to some part of the bike... pretty rare to find a bike with a vented battery that does not have some damage due to acid from the vent tube or even the caps. The bike I purchased had some corrosive damage to the centerstand as well as some wiring due improper routing and poor maintenance. The ventless battery is also cleaner, will not spill in the event of a crash or even tip over. The size difference is very small, and has no real downside that I can find. Fit is really very good. In addition, the maintenance free batteries have superior performance, more cranking amps, deeper cycle capacity which are the major benefits. No vent is just icing on the cake. The downside.. the newer battery weighs a couple of lbs more and cost a bit more...if these are issues. The YTX battery can be had typically in one day for most shops if they do not stock it. All good... JMHO
