So i am trying to replace both sprocket's and the chain, but when i get to the drive sprocket i see this lovely nut locker thing. it looks like it is 2 semi circle meeting at both nuts each with one tab that comes up to one side of the nut to keep it from turning. Is there an easy way of getting it off or do i just need to bend it down? any other pointers would be nice to.
thank you for any help i can get.[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

dude just bend the tabs, out of the way and unbolt it, it also looks like you might have a oil leak with it being wet all over the place, i will also recommend a smaller rear sprocket for it i just replace both sprockets and chain and i went three teeth down on the rear big improvement it let my little miniceptor strech its legs.

Actually that doesn't look too bad to me. In fact, it's cleaner than most VF's I've seen!

Isn't your bike super low mileage? In Kevcov's pictures I just see some chain lube residue, nothing to make me think that there is a leak. That's not to say it won't happen eventually!

there was alot of chain wax on it but it was dry when i took the cover off, just been spraying it with some stuff trying to clean it all off. however it is leaking oil out of the valve cover gasket on the front but just a little. oh and if your wondering the bike has 30k miles on it. i need to replace some of the studs on the rear tire so i think i will have it all back together by tomorrow night

Now you've sparked my curiosity - What kind of VF500 rear tire has studs?

just for the rear sprocket. there is five that go into the dampening hub thingy with the rubber with the nuts that go on the outside of the sprocket. maybe they are called something else but they look like studs to me. now i have a new problem. the chain is about 7 links to long, did they give me the wrong chain or am i supposed to cut it?

Most chains come in standard lengths. That means you have to cut them down to the number of links required for your bike. Make sure to include the master link. Whatever you do, measure/count at least two or three times. You wouldn't be the first to cut the chain one link too short!

To cut the chain down you can just grind down the rivets and pry the link plate off. If the chain you bought came with a rivet style master link you will need a special tool to stake it together. I use the clip type master links which do not require a special tool. I like those because you can remove and reinstall them. My bikes tend to be apart as much as they are together, so that's really handy.

A chain is a really important part of your bike and if it's not put together properly would be a safety hazard. If you are not 100% confident that it's together correctly then I'd have someone else look at it just to be sure.

Good to hear, I'm glad you are back on the road. I've got to say, I'm a little jealous. We are about 30 degrees away from the start of riding season here.
