That was my thought based on what you were saying...

I wonder if the foam UNI filters will work better for this, as you could squish them side-by-side a bit easier. Mount velocity stacks on each carb inlet, and then a foam filter on the end of the stack's trumpet.

Man, why don't you just mount the filters up tight against the carbs? That's the way the HRC racebikes had them, and what I thought you would be doing. You need a 10-12mm long piece attached to the carbs just to secure the filters to, nothing else.

well, simply because im on a budget and i bought pods a little too big :p these won't fit side by side or vertically as they will hit the gas tank.

so are you saying scrap this all together and get uni filters? i had to google the uni filters. but they look nice. didn't know about them. and im sure i could go vertical with them no problem.

16.24 for a sheet of the uni at 12x16".

jamie i was trying to make due with what i had, what i purchased and what tools i had. definitely don't have and am jealous of the machining skills and tools you have :D

if anyone is local philadelphia that's willing to help. im willing to accept :D

i wasn't too sure the 90's would impede that much since they were so short. here's other views.

I think that with 2 straight runs and 2 with those 90s, you may have some strange jetting issues to deal with. If you used a sweep 90 then the flow would be much better, as the air likes to travel in a straight line. With the sharp 90s, it would cram into the corner before changing direction, possibly resulting in some wierd jetting issues.

And what is the CFM for those filters you have? They do seem a bit small.

No, just take the tubing you are using and make 4 pieces that are 10-12mm long. Stick those to the carbs and mount the filters to them. The filters will be sticking up straight from each carb. That's the way you want them mounted.

ok like i said the filters are too wide to fit. look at the first pic, one filter that i currently have would not fit sideways and would actually go over the second carb opening. and my gas tank is solid and flat fitting over the top of the frame. there is not room for a filter to stick out like that hawk although i thank you for the pictorial and advice.

so it seems to scrap the idea of these particular pods. shell out for the uni filters and custom make filters with that... is this the consensus?

Call me crazy (not Shirley) but it looks like if you recreated the rubber velocity stacks in metal you could go straight and have the filters you bought work.

im just getting into tuning my 500 and good thing i came across this thread. I see K&N and Uni make air filters for the Interceptor 500, are these direct replacements or do mods need to be made? I havent gone into my bike yet, but what do the stock oem filters/filter look like? Is there one or four in there?

    peace, drew

i would guess the uni flows better as it is more porous. but the k&n would have more all around features including protection of crap getting in there.

The Uni's don't filter as well because they are just a foam filter. They also need cleaned and relubed more often, at least every year if not more often. K&N's are arguably better quality but that comes at a cost (as you have noted). Personally, I've been putting Uni filters on the last couple of VF's I've done with good results. I can't say that there is any power difference between them, or between the aftermarket vs. stock filter.

Just buy new filters and sell your old ones. I picked up 4 red filters on ebay for about $20 shipped maybe 4 months ago, just look around. In the photos below of back when I was chopping the bike up and putting filters in you can see that they fit pretty well and the tank has no clearance issues. Tomorrow I will go buy a MIG welder and some piping so I think I'll start on making metal boots instead of the rubber ones.
