The K+N might flow better, but its a smaller filter dimension, and there is no longer filter material over the actual intakes.

Well that seems kinda jacked up. I wonder if the K&N will actuall flow more air overall or not then? Why would they make it smaller than the stock one? Hmmm...thanks for the pic, I was considering getting a K&N but I wonder if there may be a better option?

I had done the exact same thing and gave K&N tech an email for explaination. They said its done that way to be near stock airflow, so it can be a drop in with no extra mods or fueling adjustments needed. I sold it and went with a BMC.

Wow, hadn't put them side by side like that myself. Anyone done the same with a BMC?
If that was really K&N's, fear of too much air flow for stock, then why not offer a "performance" version, for people that are going to buy a Power Commander type device and be able to accomodate increased air flow?

yeah I did not get that when I put mine in, at first I just thought it was for a different bike because of the difference. I will be switching to a BMC before I get it tuned this spring.

K&N is the suc, compared to BMC. I have seen it with my own eyes, back to back dyno runs.

Do BMC filters require you to remove the airbox gasket like K&N's do? I was planning on switching to the BMC but I can't find my original airbox gasket.

    KC-10 FE out...

Just receive my BMC last week and took some measures to compare with my K&N:

    BMC: 8.25 X 5.75 inches
    K&N : 7 X 6.75 inches

According to those numbers, that puts the sq in almost exactly the same... like less than .5 in. I'd say that makes about the same airflow or close enough that not one person on here could ride a bike with a k&n and then ride it with the BMC and be able to tell you which was in on which ride. Anyone says otherwise, I say prove it. I'll keep the K&N for half the price.

I think the BMC has more surface area, a little more $ though.

Now that I have the BMC, I will sell the K&N, but I agree with you that there will be no gain.

I bought a K&N, but not under the assumption of making any power gains.
I went to the re-useable filter only to save the expense of tossing out the expensive factory filters every time I needed a filter change.
If I recall correctly, the K&N cost me about the same as a factory paper filter .
Now I just clean, dry, oil, and I'm good to go for $0.00.

    BMC- 47.43 sq inches
    K&N- 47.25 sq Inches
I'd say that's not enough of a difference to justify the cost, looks like both companies are on the same page, smaller area flows as well or better than stock unit. My .02

What about the increased airflow of the filter media? Does that account for the difference NorcalBoy noted?

I have heard that the aftermarket cloth filters flow much more air per square inch of media, but allow more particulate matter to pass than a paper filter because of the inherently larger holes in the fabric. The filter oil helps the dirt cling, but that's no magic cure.

I have a K&N in my 2000 vfr and I really can't tell the difference but its pretty easy to clean and it should last for a long time if properly cared for.
