    Hello, All!

Every time I sign on to this excellent db, it tells me to introduce myself. Being a compliant type......

I just bought an '86 VFR 700 for my sons, 16 & 17. Before they got too tall, they used to ride on the back of my BMW R1100RT, and they pestered me for a long time about getting them a street bike. Though they have a fair amount of dirt bike experience, I told them "we'll talk after you finish the MSF course." Well, they called my bluff and did the course.

We spent last Saturday shopping around, bought the Viffer, I rode it home, and ordered the Haynes manual. The only excitement so far has been the conversation with my insurance agent  We'll be going with liability only for now.

The bike needs a bit of catch-up maintenance. We're anticipating making a winter project out of changing the chain and tires. As mechanically challenged as I am, it'll take all winter!

Welcome to VFRWorld! Congrats on buying a Viffer for your sons I'm sure they will love it. The only advice I can give is get the Official Honda Service Manual for your bike if you can find it. It has a lot of great information on maintenance and breaks down the bike completely. I bought my 98 VFR and laid it down (before I took the MSF course) then I put it back together using my Service manual and it helped me greatly. I wouldn't say I'm mechanically challenged, but I'm certainly no backyard mechanic either. I thought it would take me a LOT longer, but the manual really made a difference. I found it on E-bay for $20.00 bucks! From what I've read, you should be able to change Tires and Chain in a weekend (as long as you have the parts) but the service manual will tell you what other things to check whenever you have those parts off. Good Luck and safe riding to you and your kids.

congrats and welcome. I ride a 98, but I just bought an 84 vf500 for my wife who decided she'd be more comfortable on her own ride than going sitting on back. I'll be doing pretty much the same thing with catch up maintenance. I'm excited, but nervous at the same time. I don't want to bite off more than I can chew. I ordered a clymer manual from ebay and expect it any day... let's hope for the best...

Congrats on the new (to you) Viffer and welcome to our group.. A factory service manual isa valuable asset. You can sometimes find them on e-bay or you can go to Helm Inc and order one. Sounds like your sonse have a bit of time in on motorcycles, even if it is dirt bikes. I spen many years riding and racing motocross and I will have to say some of my experiences from that venue (sp) I can apply to street riding and in the past has kept me in control of my machine. The MSF course is also another place to learn more about road riding and how to handle the bike and so on and since they have that completed they are another step closer to road riding safely.
