Hey Shaynej, is this more difficult or easier than the Ortega Hwy ride? Longer or shorter?

If I may interject.....Ortega is only like 25 miles long....give or take few miles. That ride was kinda more for a meetup, and see new faces, than ride a long ride....I did ride 75 miles to get to the meetup spot though...

Oh, and Ortega is pretty easy to ride, especially since it was repaved and widened. If you really want some riding, do this ride with Shayne....he is a good rider, sets a good pace, and is great at herding the cats. Or head down to SD county sometime...we have lots of nice twisties, with low traffic....in the morning at least.

I must have met you on the Ortega ride....my memory is at a loss without a pic though.

to answer the newbie's questions, this is about twice as long as the Ortega run. The first section is a four-lane sweeping uphill section that turns into a two-lane twisty edge of a cliff road that winds up to Running Springs. From there it's progressively tighter curves, with a few hairpins until you reach the summit and the 'artic circle', where it briefly turns into a passing lane autobahn with nice banking turns and occasionally debris in roadway. Once we hit Big Bear it's congestion for 10 miles, followed by 40 miles of two-lane forest roads that wind down to Riverside.

This route is BEST in Spring/Fall when the traffic is light to non-existent. Because of the snow-tourists and water/ice on the roadway, it's more of a leasurely sport-TOURING type of ride in winter.

Scale of 1-10, (with Ortega being a 5) I'd say this route is a 8 and might be best to attack for the first timers later in Spring.

    WEATHER UPDATE

As of this morning the weather forecast is calling for Santa Ana winds to hit the Big Bear area through Sunday afternoon. Unless this changes I may need to postpone this ride until next weekend. Big Bear is NOT a fun place to ride with 60 mph gusts on cliffside mountain roads.
