Did this today but still cannot achieve the 14.5 @5000 the service manual says?Gets 14.05 @idle and 13.75@5000 with the new one but now holds this even when hot.The old unit performed normally for about 10 minutes and then dropped back to 12.30 volts at any RPM.Have rewired a CBR1100XX to the old connectors so can just plug it in if the new one ever fails. It has an extra black wire that goes to the positive terminal and is heavier built even than upgraded one.Guess I will never need it now that I have it as a back up?
    Thanks to all for advice.

Crazy I'm getting 14.7v at 4500 but it does work it's way down as the battery charges up. since I don't stand there and watch it for more than like 2 miontues I'm not surwe what it works it's way down to begore she is at a staedy rate also at Idel its right around that 14.05v mark, I believe it's the peak load one reads then will settle down a bit, if you have a good and charged battery this also may account why you have a different read. still, Hmm makes one think what the H huh?

Sounds normal, with my new RR install the Volts went from 12.3v at idle ( with failed unit ) to 14.0v at idle ( with new RR ) and 12.5v at 4k to 13.5v at 4k.

This seemed consistant with the UK VFR site bikersoracle RR guide.

From the UK VFR bikersoracle RR guide: ( with lights off )
" The SH689DA model can provide more voltage at idle than at higher revs, for example, the one on my VFR provides 14.2 volts at idle, but 13.7 volts at 5000 rpm. "

Anyone else on this site with " lights on " measured the volts of Gen 5 MK 1 with full battery with a SH689DA RR at idle and 5K to confirm ?

I think its all ok now.The main point is the old one act's like its doing it's job until it get's hot (15 MINUTES)and then drop's down to 12.3 volts.I think it was on it's way out for a while. The Honda shop parts guy has a 01 vfr800 gen 5 himself and has carried a spare since new!He has never needed it in 45000ks so I am hoping mine will last now.

I am unsure if I still have a problem as once the bike has been running for say half an hour I checked the voltage again and it was 12.95 at idle and peaked at 13.5 at 5000rpm.Started it an hour later and it's 14.05 at idle and 13.75 at 5000rpm. Guess I will just ride it and see if it dies again.Have checked the whole charging system as per the service manual and it all checks out ok.

FOOTNOTE: all good now 200rpm at idle makes all the difference at 1200rpm it consistently reads 14.05 my bike was set at 1000rpm.

:rofl: Been there, done that - TWICE. ON my 98 I did the upgraded RR with PC fan and wire mods. My 01 got a nice new Rick's stator and wire mods.

Welcome to da club!!! A fifth gen Jedi you now are. :vader:

Just replaced the RR and installed VFRness heavy gauge wire harness and while performing standard maintinance noticed the Three yellow wires that connect to the stator plug to the RR are fused together and cooked. Bike has been running fine so I separated them electric taped them thick for separation. Guess I'll be buying a new stator as well. Fak.

When I installed my new stator (call Ricks!), I cut off the plug-n-play BS and soldered those bad boys together to eliminate at least one place where a secure connection could fail.
