I just removed the rear fender/mud flap from my 06 today and man does it look sweet! 10x better than I thought it would look.
I used some flat black auto paint on the metal bracket as well as the mounting plate for the hard bags. I just wish MD didn't have such large tag plates.

Now I need a Puig screen and some bitchen pipes!

How are we supposed to know if it really happened without pictures (grin).

    like this?

This is a pretty common mod, and I think its a great idea for the VFR 6th gens. I painted mine with a nice silver finish designed for toolboxes, and its very robust. I also bent the thing at an angle I like.

I was looking at you photo there and wondering about turning the license plate sideways and tucking it up close. Would it fit?

I have a 04 vfr and I used a competition werks kit and it tucks the liscense plate up in between the cans. It does look a 100% better than the stock mud flap. Minnesota plates fit with trimming the ends about 1/4 in off of each side, don't know how big or small other states plates are for motorcycles.

I'd thought about painting it white like the bike but thought better about it. The flat black makes it look stock, the way it should have been from the begining. I just wish I could replace the license light with something smaller.

i'd flip it, but las vegas cops don't like cocking their heads sideways when they are trying to check your plates

it doesn't help that I have my plates from my other bike on this one though...

I had a 95 vfr and all I did was take a #2 pencile and trace a line around the fender where it meets the fairing. Than I used my drumel to remove everything below the line. (make sure you remove the tail fairing first) I left a small flap directly under the tail light to mount the license plate.

    Done!

Chris, thanks for the info. Only problem is that in NY you have to retain the plate light. It's the law! These new yorkers are nuts! They want to control everything but bill themselves as liberals haah!! It still may be doable I guess. Still I would love a nice sleek undertail.

I did the same mod on my ZRX which was registered in NY and kept in Staten Island. The cops never gave me a second glance.
You know why it probibly worked? The bottom of the brake light is clear plastic and lets the light from the bulbs shine down on the plate.

Does your brake light have the same clear spot?

If that doesn't work, Targa makes a button style license light that you just drill a small hole in the plastic above the plate and mount the light.

Nice clean look with the fender out of the way!!! Wish there was a better system for the OEM hardbags without the brackets. A mounting system that hooks the bags to the bike in a cleaner way!!!
