Sorry to hear you need an extension. Was it a result of an unfortunate accident, or simply an act of God?:smile:

because any pistol over that cal might be a little much for a 110 pound woman to handle (with limited shooting experiance). did you see the video of that woman shooting the .50 cal i posted earlier? if not you should take a look, the damn thing kicked back and hit her in the face.

I shot many .45s when I was that weight or less, not really any difference than a .40. I've seen many vids of guns kicking back into peoples faces, generally due to lack of respect for the weapon. I can understand you wouldn't want her to shoot large caliber guns due to her lack of experience, but isn't that her decision to make? I guess I would be offended if my fiance "did not allow" me to shoot something.

Ah, that makes more sense. Sorry sometimes I just make assumptions because I've known so many guys that think woman should have nothing to do with guns. I am no feminist or rights activist, I just think thats nuts. The funny thing is I've gone shooting with the guys that I just referred to, and can out shoot them.

Well a big game hunting rifle or shotgun with slugs would be your best options. Obviously you don't want to carry around something that big and heavy when you're just camping so you assume a little more risk and step down to a big bore pistol.

In revolvers I'd go with nothing less than a heavy bullet hunting load .357 magnum. Though a heavy hunting load 44 magnum or larger would be preferred. Nothing less than 4 inches in barrel length, 6 inches or more would be better. The snubbies just won't deliver the velocity you want.

If you prefer a semiauto, one of my personal favorite calibers for semiauto's, the 10mm Auto, might not be a bad compromise. Think of it as a .40 Magnum. My carry load in 10mm is a Double Tap 165 gr Gold Dot HP that does 1400 fps from a stock Glock 20. Double Tap Ammo makes some heavy hitting hunting loads for the 10mm, including a 220 gr lead hard cast and a 200 gr XTP HP. I've heard that the Glock 20 (10mm) is a fairly common pistol amongst folks living out in the Alaskan wilderness.

Either way what you need is a caliber and gun that can deliver deep penetration against very thick bone and dense muscle.

I carry as often as I can. My most commonly carried pistols are a Smith & Wesson 340PD (its .357 Magnum snubby but usually carry .38spl +P's), a Glock 20 10mm, and a Dan Wesson 1911 Commander Bobtail in 10mm.

My carry loads are 135 gr .38spl +P Speer Gold Dots (this is the short barrel specific load) and 165 gr 10mm Auto Gold Dot HP loaded by Double Tap Ammo.

Usually the bike it's just the S&W 340PD either in my pocket or in the tank bag.

A bit late answering, but how about the newest version of the Taurus "Judge" (the one with the three inch cylinder)? This handgun handles .45 ammo and .410 shotgun shells. I don't know a whole lot about these, but I think you can get some stopper loads for them. Might be worth looking at.

I carry a compact 45, Colt, in Portland, Oregon. I've had a CWP for Oregon & Washington for years. I always carry. I'd rather leave the lipstick behind than my buddy Colt!

I've handled one of these before and I think it's probably better for use against the two legged predators and not so good against bears. The the Judge shoots either .45 Long Colt or the .410 shotgun shells. If you're going to go with a heavy steel revolver this size then a .44 Mag is a better option. The muzzle velocity is signifcantly higher and there are much better bullet choices available.

As for shooting the .410 shells, there's a couple of reasons this would be ineffective at against a bear. One, .410 shot in general is effective against small game, not big predators because the shot cannot penetrate the bear deep enough to put it down and that's using a long shotgun barrel. Two, the rifling in the Judge's barrel for the .45 LC bullets causes the shot to spin in the barrel. This leads to a very fast spread that does not pattern like a normal shotgun. You get a halo pattern. This really is an upclose "carjacker" gun since past about 10 yards the halo gets pretty large in size and very little will impact near your point of aim. Finally, if you're using .410 slugs these would be even less effective than the .45 LC due to velocity reasons.

The judge is an excellent close quarters defensive idea, but not effective against a large predator. It's a very interesting gun to shoot, the halo pattern is odd looking the first time you see it. I totally didn't expect that.
