I tend to be fussy on my engine oil and most of the time I only use Castrol, many years now I have used Castrol magnetic in my cars and also on my old bikes, never had a problem and seems good quality oil.

This really is a carry on from my last post because after reading up about the starter clutch and the faults that were occuring on the older VFR's some say part or fully synthetic may have contributed to the fault

So really all I'm asking is should I just go for normal Castrol like this Clickety ClickCastrol Power1 GPS 4T 10W-30 4L from Halfords Price £28.99 or should I be looking at some part synthetic or fully ?

    Regards,

    TPR

I tried OIL in the search but the search function won't help with only three letters. I did search 1st before I posted, it was a genuine question because of the age of the bike and the problems that occured with the starter clutch.

The general consensus (without starting another ALL out oil war flamefest) is to use (M/C specific, read, NOT energy conserving oil) dino oil until break-in is complete, then switch to a quality (M/C specific, read, NOT energy conserving oil) synthetic oil. The main part is to make sure that is it NOT energy conserving...that is, make sure it does not have any teflon, type slippery additives that will turn your clutch to toast.

For the most part, all the bad stuff you hear about bikes running synthetic is false. A top brand synthetic is a superior oil. We have gear-driven cam bikes, and along with the gearbox, this "chops" up the oil a good deal, and can turn a dino multi-viscosity oil to much in no time. Top grade synthetics are formulated to resist this longer.

Some of our top grade M/C synthetics in the US are: Redline, Amsoil, & Mobil 1....

Somebody is gonna chime in that they swear by synthetic from the start, and another person has used peanut oil for decades......pick yer poison.

    Hey thank you derstuka

Yeah the bike is well run in 1988 model and about 40 k on the clock if I remember rightly maybe a few more.

Think I'll be sticking with the Castrol, I'll pick some up tomorrow and then hopefully be back on the Road for the weekend

    Regards,

    TPR.

I used Bardahl full syntetic XTC-60 and I had 2 problems with it: problems to engage 1st gear from neutral, some slips of the clutch when the motor was really hot...

I've passed to semisynt Motul 5100...all the problems I had are gone

I use a semi-synthetic oil in all of my bikes. 3 of them are 1986 models and I've had no problems at all.
