need help with a 1986 vf 500 swing arm

ok i need to test all of you vfr wisemen out there so please come out and share your knownlegde with me.

i have a 86 vf500 and i end buy 86750 rotors for it well they bolt to the wheel but the stock caliper will not work (the bracket is to small) then i tried a 750 bracket and caliper well the axle bolt is not big enough round so, i picked up a 86 750 swingarm well it is to wide were it bolts to the frame the stock swingarm meassures at 8 &3/8 and the 750 swingarm meassures at 9 & 3/8s, im wondering if there is another swingarm that will bolt up to this bike, the goal here is to run the bigger 750 brakes all the way around the bike, or mybe one of you know a person who might be able the mill the 750 swingarm to the right width? please all vfr wisemen come out of the wood works its time to work now, any and all help would be greatly aprecated. thank you

 

Matt - why go through all that trouble? Parts for the 500 are readily available on eBay. Anything off the 750 would have to be modified to fit your bike. It just seems like a lot of work for little or no gain.

 

yes i see the point your makeing, but the 750 runs big brakes and they are vented, putting the swingarm on will not gain anything, but in order for me to the bigger brakes i need the wheel and swingarm

 

Might be just me but i don't think you need more brakes on the back of the bike as it does very little actual braking.Learning to use the fronts will do much more for your overall stopping.Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

 

I'm just wondering why you want the bigger brakes. On a motorcycle there is such a thing as too much brake. The brakes may stop fine for a 750, but will they stop the 500 too fast, as it is a lighter machine??. And if its the vented rotors you're looking for, they do make them for the 500. If it makes you feel more comfortable with bigger brakes, then continue on, but be carful testing them out. Wouldn't want to see a fellow 86 500 owner hurt themselves (or their bike).

 

well there, that is something i did not take in a count for, well then, i do believe you are right, i need to go back and look at both specs on these bikes, thank you for openning my eyes on a new look.

 

Also, if you go that route, you'll need a longer chain and the extended wheelbase might negatively affect the handling. You might just be creating bigger problems.

 

thank you stewart, yeah i did some more searching and im just openning a big can of worms, i have a big problem with wanting the best stuff or make it better, well sometimes you cant improve thing only make them worse, i can deffinetly be thankful for this web site and all the good people here that are willing to help you.

 

if you want real improvement, sell that beginner's bike and step up to any post-'86 VFR 700, 750, or 800
